In the Zombie Apocalypse, the most important thing to do is survive, or so one would think.
However for Boyfriend of the Dead, the most important thing to do seems to be finding a romantic partner to kill some time with! In this lighthearted and adorable comic, a human girl falls in love with a very picky zombie. Together, the pair make some unlikely friends and spend their days goofing off and enjoying the end of the world. What could go wrong?
At the very beginning of the comic, we meet our protagonist, Alex. She is a very prissy human girl who likes the most expensive clothes and jewelry, but who also has a killer golf swing. Much to the reader’s surprise, this small, admittedly well dress girl, is an absolute zombie-slaying beast. She has no time for undead shenanigans, not when she needs a new purse.
Sometime later we meet her Romeo to be, N. He is a Zombie who has no memories of his past, not even his name. He tries to go about his life like a “normal Zombie” at first, but soon finds that the thought of eating the people he encounters makes him sick. That is until he meets Alex.
To be honest, here, the whole thing starts off suspiciously close to the 2013 drama/romance movie “Warm Bodies”. However, that’s because it’s supposed to! Boyfriend of the Dead is a comedy, so if you see similarities or maybe even direct quotes from some of your favorite movies about the undead, don’t get angry! This is done on purpose to point out some of the more silly aspects of movies, or highlight comedic moments. The whole experience is focused on humor, so just enjoy it.
The art style of Boyfriend of the Dead is a bit off-putting. It’s entirely too “cartoony” for some. When I first saw the comic, I myself was unsure about it. However I was pleasantly surprised by its humorous antics, so I continued to read. The art itself isn’t bad. It is simplistic, yet somehow it is also detailed when it needs to be. At some points the backgrounds are just colored screens with polka-dots, and in others we get detailed shots of a beautiful tower resting among some trees. It can be nice to get a little break from the simplicity, however, it can also seem a bit out of place with what we’re used to seeing, and it can make the reader think that the detailed background means something important is coming, even if it’s not.
As for the story itself, it can seem to drag on. This can be frustrating when the comic updates. If you’ve been waiting for the next chapter to come out so you can learn what’s behind the apocalypse itself, or see if a tense moment will get resolved, chances are you’ll have to wait out two more updates before you get an answer. It’s good to leave the reader in suspense, however, sometimes it begins to get irritating when you never seem to get any resolution. This comic is better suited for casual reading. It is better for those who forget about reading for a week, rather than hardcore fans.
At the end of the day, Boyfriend of the Dead Is a cute, funny comic. If you’ve had a tough day and you want to laugh without getting “too invested” in something, it will suit your purposes perfectly. We may never find out what’s going on behind the apocalypse, but we can see what the characters had for lunch that day. As a bonus, you sometimes learn recipes while reading! The only con to this is it can make you hungry! Make sure to grab a snack before you dig into this comic.
Boyfriend of the Dead updates on Webtoon every Tuesday and Friday. It is currently on “episode 208.5 (part 7).

Boyfriend of the Dead
The art is very stylistic and may not be for everyone. The story sometimes seems to go through "filler" arcs before getting to anything with purpose, however that makes this comic fun and light, which it is supposed to be. Overall, It's a good comic. If the "cartoony" art style doesn't put you off, and you're looking for a cute, funny comic, it's worth the read.
