Video Game Mini-Review: KONOSUBA – God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! Love For These Clothes Of Desire!

While I don’t care for the fanbase and the occasional gag in poor taste, I find KONOSUBA one of the funnier anime series of the 2010s. The deconstruction of the fantasy/isekai genres with four genuinely awful people acting as protagonists is a delight, so of course there is room for a visual novel adaptation. KONOSUBA – God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! Love For These Clothes Of Desire! is a visual novel with an entirely original storyline, but has all of the usual gags that fans expect from KONOSUBA.

There isn’t much gameplay here as the game is a mostly traditional visual novel, but there are a few mechanics in which players are tasked to put together ingredients to make ridiculous costumes for the characters, and of course, most of them exist solely for the fanservice. Otherwise, that’s it. It’s a lot of reading with the occasional decision-making.

This visual novel simply feels like a new episode of the series and isn’t much more than that. The stakes aren’t incredibly high, and the journey is just as ridiculous as one would expect. This is a game made for fans. While the humor and character moments are accessible to newcomers, most of the joy in Love For These Clothes Of Desire lies in revisiting the familiar.

It’s a raunchy game that relies on every immature gag as possible. There is a decent amount of fanservice, and that obviously won’t be for everyone. While KONOSUBA acts as a parody, it leans into it so much that sometimes it just doesn’t feel like a joke, and instead, just another anime stereotype where the women (and girls, unfortunately) are overly sexualized.

The art is fine throughout, with character portraits and backgrounds that look like they belong in the anime. The quality isn’t exceptional like some of the best visual novels, but it feels comforting. The game is fully voiced by the original voice KONOSUBA voice actors, which is wonderful. Every one of these characters have iconic voices and lines, and it’s nice to hear those again.

If the player is a KONOSUBA fan and just wants more content (Especially since there hasn’t been a new episode of KONOSUBA in over 5 years, players will want to check out Love For These Clothes Of Desire. This is a competent, well-written visual, but there isn’t much to it if the player isn’t a fan. In reality, there are many much better visual novels on the Nintendo Switch, but of course, none of them are KONOSUBA, for better or for worse.

Konosuba is a competent visual novel that relies on the player being a fan of the source material. Otherwise it falls flat.

Marcus isn't good at a lot, but he is an expert at replaying Final Fantasy games despite there being a lot of good stuff out there. He also loves comics, board games, and anime. He thinks Chip Zdarsky is a treasure.
