Nailbiter Returns #1
Image Comics
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Mike Henderson & Adam Guzowski
Nailbiter is one of my all-time favorite horror series. The story about a town that just can’t shake its relationship with serial killers was full of action, tension, and impressive worldbuilding. I was delighted when a sequel was announced, though I was admittedly nervous about the direction that the series would possibly take. Now the people of Buckaroo are returning in Nailbiter Returns, instantly replacing all of my anxiety with pure joy.
Joshua Williamson opens up the new series with an uneasy cold open that introduces readers to a killer and hapless victim. Following the ominous opening, Nailbiter Returns #1 picks up almost immediately after the original series’ cliffhanger. Sheriff Crane’s daughter takes center stage in this issue and discovers the aftermath of the previous issue’s finale. Eventually, Crane’s daughter runs into Agent Finch, who is investigating a string of Buckaroo copycat murders. This makes for a natural follow-up, making this feel like Nailbiter. Fans of the original series will find plenty to love in this issue as the characters explore Buckaroo’s history.
While this is a direct sequel, Williamson does a fine job of making the series accessible to readers. Obviously this is much more enjoyable as a sequel, but those who have never read Nailbiter will still find plenty to enjoy here. The characters get fine introductions, and the important parts of Buckaroo’s history and the events of the first issues are refreshed. This is also nice for those who haven’t read the series in a while. Williamson’s script successfully balances recaps and new content, making this debut as accessible as it needs to be.
Mike Henderson returns to deliver the grotesque art that the original series was known for. The characters are expressive and every panel looks great. Every few pages is a horrific sight that will stick to the reader well after they close this book. Adam Guzowski fills the panels with colorful gore, with coloring that completes the look and feel of the series. Buckaroo looks great, the murders look scary, and gore is unsettling. A perfect combination.
Nailbiter Returns #1 is everything that fans of Nailbiter want. It’s chilling and full of mystery, with tons of lore to pull from. This is a must-buy for horror fans.
