Daredevil #10
Marvel Comics
Writer: Chip Zdarsky
Artist: Jorge Fornes
“No Devils, Only God” ends with a bang, with s#@t hitting the fan at the police station. Some people might have been wrong and turned off by the slower pace of the last couple of issues (I’m looking at you, ETHAN), but this issue sure as hell (heh) satisfies those cravings for some sweet, sweet action.
#10? It’s fantabulous.
Picking off where the last issue ended, we see that Matt and Mindy have gone full-on with their affair. A highly enjoyable endeavor, sure, but one of questionable morality (and longevity). It is this dilemma, this constant questioning of his own choices, that has always drawn me to Daredevil, aka the best superhero ever. Yes, at his core, Daredevil is a good guy (not in the modern kind of way, though), a hero. But he is a good guy-hero that is constantly questioning himself, constantly contemplating his own morality and constantly considering how his less-than-stellar choices might affect others. It is this personality trait that I find so relatable and why I come back to the character with every issue. And I got to say, Chip nails this inner turmoil exceptionally.
By the way, the issue is not just Matt having post-coital anxiety. It’s just the only thing I’m willing to talk about without spoiling too much.
But yeah, we all know Chip knows his Daredevil, the guy has already written nine great issues prior to this one. So what makes this one so, so good? I got three words for you – Jorge freakin’ Fornes! And three more words as well – Jordie flippin’ Bellaire! I came across Jorge on the Batman: Secret Files #1 one-shot and was immediately blown away by his stuff. On the other end, Jordie Bellaire has singlehandedly lifted Mikel Janin’s art from “eh, it’s fine” to “oh my God this looks so good”. So seeing both of these talented artists on Daredevil got me excited. And they do not disappoint. Fornes’ pop art style, combined with Bellaire’s noir sensibilities are the perfect combination for this book.
I’d also like to give a special kudos to the letterer – VC’s Clayton Cowles. With Matt Murdock being blind, the artists and letterers always get a chance to be creative with presenting sound in a visual-only medium. And Cowles goes ballistic this time. You get a great sense of Daredevil being overwhelmed by all the different sounds and voices and words, but then filtering through all of it to get to the most important stuff. And, of course, it looks really, really dope.
Also, did you see that cover? Man, that cover is slick. Just scroll over to the top and give it another look. God, it’s so good.
Anyway, you should definitely go get this book and all the back issues. Daredevil is the best and Chip Zdarsky is great and I hope we get more of Fornes and Bellaire on Daredevil. And soon.
