Savage Avengers #4
Marvel Comics
Writer: Gerry Duggan
Artist: Mike Deodato Jr.
An assassin, a wizard, a barbarian, and three of the deadliest warriors alive. Elektra, Doctor Voodoo, Conan the Barbarian, Wolverine, the Punisher and Venom. That’s the team in Savage Avengers and what a team they are. All brought together by Kulan Gath, and now all determined to save the world from the Marrow God.
Savage Avengers #6 continues with the team fighting Kulan Gath and the newly summoned Marrow God. Despite being stabbed, shot and magicked various times, Kulan Gath and the Marrow God eventually move the fight to a city. With the fate of the Earth in the balance, the Savage Avengers follow in hopes of stopping them
This comic is just so fun to read. The fate of the world is in the balance like it usually is in comic books, and the characters take it seriously. But there are still some fun moments here. Doctor Voodoo at one point does the cool guy “I’m putting on my shades” move. Then Frank Castle goes through some serious emotional trauma. If that weren’t enough, Frank Castle takes the sunglasses from Voodoo and does the same move. The story doesn’t progress too much, we’re fighting the same people still, but the location changes. And Venom (the one in previous issues has just been a symbiote) joins the team.
Mike Deodato’s art continues to blow me away in this comic. It’s dark, it’s gritty and it captures the darker tone all of these characters bring. Punisher can’t bring himself to move at a certain point (for reasons) and you can see the horror on his face. We get a good amount of blood and violence in here. There are some creepy “skinwalker” creatures, and even Venom gets a badass new look in this issue.
I’m glad I’m wrong about things sometimes because I’ll be honest, a “savage” Avengers team didn’t appeal to me initially. But my god do I love this comic. We’re only four issues deep but it’s just an incredible amount of fun in each issue, this one being no different. The story so far isn’t the most unique thing ever. It’s your basic “wizard summons a demon to destroy the world” type thing. But I can forgive it because the characters and their interactions make it great. On top of that, I don’t think there’s any better artist for this book than Mike Deodato Jr. If you’re not reading this book, you should be, you won’t be disappointed.

Savage Avengers (2019-) #4
Savage Avengers #4 is one of the most fun comics to read, while still being one of the darker ones coming from Marvel. The story is good, but the characters and the art really make it shine.
