Outer Darkness #2
Image Comics
Writer: John Layman
Artist: Afu Chan
Outer Darkness, published by Image Comics, is a science fantasy that combines the exploration of space adventure with the mythical powers of a fantasy story. The result is a strange yet satisfying experience that gives hard genre enthusiasts a fun, though predictable adventure.
Story:
Outer Darkness #2 does a great job of introducing the host of characters to readers who might have missed #1. While it feels forced at first, readers quickly adapt to captioned names and titles by major characters. This works only because the story centers around a new space captain, getting to know his crew. This issue lifts a lot of weight in the sense of world building. It’s made clear early on that magic and technology exists together in this world, and thought the magic is not explained in detail, readers are treated to some cool monsters and spectacular spells. This issue ends in a tense note, with many plot points spawning from the problems the crew encounters in this issue.
Characters:
While this issue thrives on present action, the wide cast of characters introduced is the true strength of this series. Mathematicians use magical equations to ward off demons. The master of arms commands a troop of soldiers. The new captain has a reckless and streak that must be explained. Every character has a place on this ship and in this story. I hope these archetypal characters expand in feature issues, past their common bonds.
Art/Writing:
By itself, the art is both cartoonish and appropriate for such whimsical adventure. However, some of the writing does not match up with the visual aspect of this piece. I can’t decide if this is lack of cohesion is more the fault of the artist or the writer. This piece is clearly for an adult audience. The main character swears and drops the f-bomb multiple times. While I am not against swearing in any form of art, there is a dichotomy when it comes to these cartoonish characters using such hard words. The lack of a more unique and creative curse word is a true loss to this piece that detracts from its verisimilitude. I believe this is due to the artist/writer partnership.
Science Fantasy:
Science Fantasy is a term seldom used in literature and film, but it fits this piece perfect. While Outer Darkness isn’t as mystical as, say, Star Wars, it still has some great charm, and this reader looks forward to seeing more of these characters.
Outer Darkness #2
A fun, yet strange, journey through space... with magic.
