Deadpool Assassin #6
Marvel Comics
Writer Cullen Bunn
Artist: Mark Bagley
Deadpool Assassin feels like a return to the classic Deadpool. The late 90s Deadpool where he was just kind of in it for the money. This miniseries has Deadpool teaming up with Weasel to make enough money to finally retire. But, being Deadpool, things don’t go as planned.
From the last issue, Deadpool is standing over Weasel, dead from a sword through his chest. His pregnant wife kidnapped by Deadpool’s “sidekick” Threnody. Owing it to his friend, Deadpool sets off to get Weasel’s wife away from Threnody, before she kills her.
There’s not much more to this issue than that. Bloodscream follows Deadpool into Threnody’s lair, and the two fight, while Deadpool tries to save Weasel’s wife. I like this ending though. It feels appropriate when you look at the circumstances. No one really gets a happy ending. Weasel is dead, and his wife Clarice is pregnant. Because she’s completely unaware of Weasel’s mercenary life, she doesn’t want to anything to do with Deadpool. Threnody, his one time sidekick, is MIA. Deadpool has given up his dreams of retirement. I don’t think this will have a big impact on the main Deadpool continuity, but it’s a fun side trip.
Mark Bagley’s art is great. Deadpool and Bloodscream fight for a good number of pages, and the action translates well. It’s appropriately bloody for Deadpool (and black liquid-ish for Bloodscream) who takes some hits. The glow/aura around Threnody’s powers looks good. There’s a page where she goes full power, and you can see hands and faces in the light around her. Threnody’s lair is in the sewers, so there’s not really much of a background for most of the issue. When it’s not action blur, it’s just colorless concrete for most of the issue. Otherwise, I think everything else is pretty good.
I do like the non-happy ending to everything, but this issue also feels short. It’s mostly just the fight between Wade and Bloodscream, and Wade trying to save Weasel’s wife. I feel like this was supposed to be the start of an ongoing comic, rather than a miniseries. Weasel’s death was a bit of a surprise, but it’s not something I’m expecting to see mentioned in the main Deadpool book.
Overall, everything feels a little inconsequential. If this was just one story arc in a longer run, I don’t think it would be considered the best. As a miniseries, it works well, but it’s far from being THE Deadpool story. As a whole, I’d recommend this miniseries. It’s a good Deadpool story, and Mark Bagley’s Deadpool is nice to look at. This final issue just feels short and leaves a lot of open-ended conclusions that we probably won’t see again.
Deadpool Assassin #6
Deadpool Assassin #6 has good looking art, but feels short and leaves on a bit of a downbeat while wrapping up the story.
