Scooby Apocalypse #32
DC Comics
Writers: J.M. DeMatteis, Heath Corson
Artists: Pat Ollife, Gus Vazquez
Scooby Apocalypse is one of my favorite books coming out these days. It’s always my go-to recommendation if someone asks for recommendations. It’s a fun comic book and has done what no other piece of Scooby-Doo media has ever dared in killing Fred. But since it’s a comic book, Fred is back and the group has to deal with him now (not that I’m complaining.
Scooby Apocalypse #32 finally sees the Mystery Inc. group all together again for the first time in a few issues. Of course, it’s to rescue Daphne from Fred who’s been resurrected by nanites. We also get the continuing story of Atom Ant and his audition for the Justice League.
This is a good issue of Scooby Apocalypse. There are more tense conversations between zombie-Fred and Daphne. The main focus of the past few issues has been between the two of them, but it’s a big enough thing to warrant it. We also see Shaggy announcing Velma’s pregnancy to the world, which I like. It’s definitely in character for him. Though a baby in an apocalypse rarely works out, I also like that the entire gang is together for what seems like the first time since Fred’s death. Especially if you include zombie-Fred.
Pat Ollife’s art is great as always. There’s some, but not much, action in this issue and it looks good. I think there’s a good amount of emotion showing across the characters through the issue. It’s all a nice contrast to zombie-Fred who for the most part is emotionless. There’s also a good mix of monsters that have their own look, rather than a standard look, or crowd of blobs.
The backup Atom Ant story is funny. For the next part of his audition to join the Justice League, he’s sent into space with Green Lantern. Though, not any of the ones you’re thinking of. He’s partnered with G’Nort (I had to google him too) to test his ability to not interfere with a less advanced society. The story here is funny, if not a little too easy to predict what will happen. Gus Vazquez also does a great job on the art. This feels a little longer than previous backup stories, but that’s not a bad thing, in this case.
If you’re not on the Scooby Apocalypse train yet than we can’t be friends. I mean, we probably can, but you should still read it. This issue is good, same as the last issues have been. The story is great and building to a big confrontation. The art is great and the characters express a lot of emotion. The backup story is fantastic as well, and (in my opinion) worthy of its own mini-series or single issue.
Scooby Apocalypse #32
Scooby Apocalypse #32 gives us the continued post-apocalyptic adventures of the Mystery Inc. gang. Great story and good art. The backup story is entertaining and funny with great art as well.
