2020’s anime are now mostly complete and soon we’ll be starting on a whole new anime season. There’s a whole load of new shows in the lineup but which are the top five to keep an eye on? Here are my personal recommendations for the anime to check out!
The Promised Neverland Season 2
The Promised Neverland was one of the best shows to air back in 2019, and one I personally enjoyed watching from week to week with its tense game of cat and mouse and vivid characters. Following orphans Emma, Norman, and Ray, the first season centred around them discovering the true nature of the world outside the orphanage they grew up in and hatching a risky plan to escape with all the other kids. This series will pick up after the events of this escape and it’s sure to be a very different tone for the show. Either way, I’m very excited to find out what happens next and how the children will cope with living in the world outside Grace Field House.
Attack on Titan: The Final Season
Attack on Titan is one of the biggest titles in recent years and with this being the final season, there are lots of high expectations for the finale. I admittedly fell off the franchise bandwagon for this one a while back – I loved the first season with all the thrills and interesting characters but eventually couldn’t keep up with it and switched to the manga for a while. Probably a bit tough to catch up with the series in time for this season airing (it actually already began airing in December), but if you’re in the mood for something with a dark action-filled story and lots of twists and turns this is definitely one to watch!
Horimiya
Horimiya is a manga I’ve heard about for many years now, since its initial publication in 2011, and has a lot of popularity already (it was a webcomic before that also). This season finally sees an anime adaptation for this series and I’m expecting it to be one of the more emotionally complex school romances of the show’s airing. The series follows polar opposites Kyouko and Izumi, who end up discovering how different the other is outside of their school personaes. Expect fun, comedy, and heartwarming scenes from this one!
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time
It’s been a long time coming but at last, the final Evangelion remake movie has a set release date for January 2021. Given today’s current climate, I don’t expect it to have a wide theatrical release and there might be some time to wait before it’s DVD and Blu-ray release. The last movie really started to take the storyline in a different direction from that of the original show and I honestly have no idea where this last movie will continue to journey to. Regardless, I have a huge love for the original series and I am very excited to find out what will happen at this new end of Evangelion.
2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Club
I’m a big fan of sports anime, so this show caught my eye instantly of the ones set to air this season. Oddly, I was never really a big fan of the hugely popular Haikyuu!! series, preferring instead of other series like Prince of Tennis, Yowamushi Pedal, and Free! The preview for this new anime though came across as a more introspective take on the typical sports show, with a big focus on the emotion between the characters and the relationships between them. Whilst I’m sure the focus will still be on the volleyball matches, there are definite hints here to suggest that the show will also feature heavily the development of the main cast. The visuals look clean and nice, and the story tags suggest this will be focused more on the slice of life elements then the shounen ones (the manga actually has the josei tag, suggesting this to be a series aimed more at older females, but at current, there aren’t many chapters released).
Others I’ll be keeping an eye on: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, Sk8 the Infinity, Wonder Egg Priority
