It’s time for Subaru to suffer some more, isn’t it? Re:Zero is finally back with a new season. It seems like it’s going to bring new enemies and more Subaru deaths. So how is the first episode of this season?
In short, it’s more of the same. That’s not a bad thing, as Re:Zero‘s first season did a fine job at developing its characters while also delivering compelling drama. If you watched the director’s cut of the first season, then you have already seen the first minutes of the new season. Rem has seemingly been erased from existence, and it’s up to Subaru and a few allies to figure out who or what is responsible. This episode acts as a solid introduction to what’s ahead, and already carries some strong emotional beats.
Visually, this episode does everything that it needs to. The first half of the episode is full of movement and all of it is animated well. Nothing in this episode looks choppy or out of place, which is frankly what I’ve come to expect from this series. The few new characters introduced in this episode have some great designs that seem to suit their personalities well. Everyone else mostly looks the same, which is more or less great.
The voice acting is top-notch, and they help to elevate this anime to some new heights. Subaru’s voice in particular carries the emotional beats, making the suffering easier to connect to for the viewer. The music hits just right, further adding emotion to every scene. Production-wise, this is a complete package.
The only possible drawback to this episode is that it starts off strong and fizzles out in intensity as the episode carries on. The latter half is mostly exposition, which is fine, but it does slow the momentum when it follows up the high-intensity opening. At least all of the conversations are compelling, making this easy to get immersed in.
Re:Zero‘s second season is off to a fantastic start. The episode is full of tension and has some powerful emotional moments. If you are at all invested in the series, it is worth diving back into.
