The question of life after death is one that has been around for thousands of years. Ever since Humanity gained the ability to think critically, we’ve all wondered what happens at the end of it all. Will there be a Heaven? Or a Hell? Is there a Purgatory where we all go to wait until something exciting happens? Or is there nothing at all? If you’re one of the millions of people who wonder about this very same thing, check out Refund High School on Webtoon, and it may give you a few new ideas!
Refund High School focuses on a high school girl named Aru who has never had a boyfriend and has just been hit by a van. That’s right, in the very first episode she dies! When she opens her eyes she can see people around her, but none of them can see or hear her. Soon she is whisked away by the Grim Reaper and brought to the Underworld. Once there, she meets a being called King Yemma, who offers her two choices: She can be reincarnated at random, or she can attend a school for young people who have died too early. If she chooses the latter, and graduates, she will have the potential to be reincarnated with whatever her heart’s greatest wish is.
In Aru’s case, the choice is easy. Her greatest wish is to be someone with a boyfriend, so she quickly accepts the second option and is sent away to Reincarnation High. She meets many new and unexpected friends along the way, and comes to realize that humans are not the only living creatures in the world! What kind of classes will Aru face? What kind of adventures will she have in a world of the dead? Will she finally get a boyfriend?! You’ll have to read the comic to find that out.
What I can tell you about Refund High school is that the art is beautiful. Each panel is detailed in different ways. Most of the time the backgrounds are used to express how characters are feeling, or set the tone for a tense, or romantic moment. We do get to see backgrounds with more substance, however, if something is truly important it will get its own panel. For example, the first time Reincarnation High was shown, it took up an entire panel, with our main characters shown very small in front of it. This technique really helps with expressing the character’s emotions as well. While showing the building and writing in sound effects, the reader can tell very clearly what emotions are meant to be displayed.
I genuinely enjoy this, because it makes me almost feel like I’m part of the story, feeling what each character feels and going on this journey with them. I’m also quite fond of the character designs in this comic as well. They have a classic cartoon look to them while being very detailed at the same time. They are simple, yet complex, and this brings depth to them. Do keep in mind, that the art style itself is rounded. This is to say that most things have a cute look to them, rather than anything dark and serious. If you’re here to read about Aru finding true love, though, I’m sure a cute art style won’t bother you too much. Personally, I enjoy the art style. It made the comic stand out to me in a way that seemed to be very much it’s own.
Overall, the story is great, but the art is beautiful. This comic is adorable and very much worth the read. Though it appears cute on the surface and may seem superficial, Refund High School has very touching moments. It will jerk your feelings around, make you root for the characters, and sometimes it may even make you cry. I fell in love with this comic, and in fact, it was my first Webtoon comic, ever. This is the comic that kept me coming back. So give it a read when you have the time. I promise it’s worth it.

Refund High School
An adorable, sweet comic about a girl who dies without ever having a boyfriend. She ends up in a school of the dead for young people who died too soon. This was a tear-jerking, heartwarming comic, and I'm glad to have read it.
