Relationships are supposed to be based on trust, and mutual understanding. In a good relationship, there should never be any doubt about your partner’s intentions. You should feel as though you know them well. However, what if that relationship was built entirely on a lie? What if the person you loved wasn’t who you thought they were? Well, with this Webtoon Review of “My Deepest Secret”, you may just want to find out!
Our story begins with a girl named Emma. She works in a coffee shop, along with her handsome boyfriend Ellios. Emma seems to be a normal girl. She is easily flustered around Ellios, and he seems to truly care for her, as well. Maybe he cares for her a little too much, though.
As the comic continues, we see their relationship get stronger, and we begin to notice strange things about Ellios. He is clearly keeping a secret from Emma. What that is, I won’t say. You’ll have to read the comic for that. However, Emma seems to be keeping a few secrets of her own. Not just from Ellios, but from everyone. Tragic and unfortunate incidents keep happening to, and around Emma, which gets the attention of a well known amateur detective that attends the same school as she does. Unfortunately for her, detective Yo-han is determined to crack his case and find out just what these two seem to be hiding.
The art style in My Deepest Secret is very expressive. It has more of a cartoon look to it, but one that is more mature. Characters have rounder features than traditional anime but are just as detailed. Sometimes the artist uses backgrounds to express emotions for a scene. For example, in the first episode, when Emma looks at Ellios, we see her blushing face. Behind her, the background is lightly pink with airbrushed white spots, accompanied by the thumping of Emma’s heart. This makes the scene look romantic or almost magical. The reader can really see how Emma is feeling during this moment.
This is not always the case, though. The artist switches between backgrounds that express inner feelings, and actual backgrounds. Another example is also in episode 1 when a cat pees on Emma’s shoe. She gets embarrassed because it is in front of Ellios, who is perfect for her. She runs back into the coffee shop to get an extra pair of shoes. In this scene we see her running back into a building, holding the glass door open.
Personally, I adore this style. Using both kinds of backgrounds really helps me get immersed in a story. Not only can I see what’s happening, but I can see the emotion behind the characters. It’s well balanced, too. There are enough “real” backgrounds that I hardly notice the switch. I feel as though I always know what’s going on at any moment. This is very important for a comic that chooses to do this, and I feel that My Deepest Secret does it well.
