Mr. Charlie
Webtoon
Creator: AyaToons
Once or twice in life, we all end up with a neighbor who is a little strange. Perhaps they talk to themselves, loudly, or they may only peek out at you through the blinds. Maybe they avoid you altogether. What would you do if you had a neighbor who spoke in the third person? One who was overly friendly and tried to cheer you up, but also one who people seemed to go missing around? Well, check out the Webtoon Mr. Charlie if you want to find out!
Before I continue with my review, I would like to point out that I am reviewing ONLY The first Mr. Charlie, here. There are, in fact, 2 more.
Now, Mr. Charlie is a Unique kind of Webtoon. It combines comic relief with some very dark and disturbing themes, and in my opinion does it well. The main antagonist is a psychotic murderer named Mr. Charlie who speaks of himself in the third person. The main protagonist is a woman named Heather (Heath for short) who used to be a police officer. She now works in fast food, due to some dark incident in her past at the police department. Heath is a serious character who keeps to herself. Mr. Charlie is an overly friendly and “wacky” neighbor who always seems to have some silly antics going on.
Mr. Charlie is basically a game of Cat and Mouse, dressed up as a faux murder mystery. From the beginning, it’s very obvious that Charlie is the murderer. His childish behavior sometimes can get grating or irritating because of this. I often found myself wondering how Heath didn’t see that he was behind everything, and it made me lose respect for the main character. However, I did admire everything that she went through in the end. For me, though, the very first Mr. Charlie comic felt rushed. The ending left much to be desired. I had to continue reading the other two comics to even get a full grasp of the story. So if you pick up Mr. Charlie, be prepared to read the other two as well, unless you dislike the story enough to quit without getting a resolution.
The art in Mr. Charlie is not bad, but It is not as “professional” as many of the other Webtoons I’ve reviewed. However, I do feel it has a certain charm. You can tell exactly what everything is supposed to be, and the characters showed complex emotions on their faces, so I think the artwork is fine. In fact, it reminds me a little of the “Scott Pilgrim” books, though the art in “Scott Pilgrim” was a little more rounded and cute. The art does get better with each comic, I feel, but it also isn’t bad from the start. It just takes a little getting used to! I do also wish it had been in color. All three comics are (mostly) in black and white.
All in all, this was an alright comic. I recommend it if you’re bored and you want something quick to read! I read all three of them in under an hour, and they are completely finished.
Mr. Charlie was an endearing comic. Though it had some flaws, I still recommend it. Mr. Charlie deals with some sensitive themes such as murder, suicide, sexual assault, and abortion. Please do not read this comic if you are sensitive to these sorts of themes! You can find Mr. Charlie on Webtoon by AyaToons!
Mr Charlie
Mr. Charlie is a cute, psychotic, webtoon with extremely dark elements. Not for those sensitive to mature themes!!
