In a world of magic, Witches and Weredogs exist alongside normal human beings. Their existence is known, and accepted, and they are integral parts of human society. Witches go to a special school to practice and hone their talents. They learn spells like teleportation, and different kinds of healing magic. Weredogs on the other hand, are good at more physical labor. Weredogs are people who have animal forms, all of which are regular dogs that you might own at home. What about Werewolves, though? Well, in this Webtoon Review we’ll need to dive into the lore of Lumine to get the answer to that.
Lumine is a Webtoon created by Emma Krogell. It follows the story of a young Weredog named Lumine as he tries to survive in a world that has not been very kind to him. When we first meet Lumine, he is no bigger than a puppy. He is dirty, and constantly getting into fights. He is down on his luck and was previously fired from his job. It is then that his luck changes as he meets Who will become his new best friend; Kody. A young witch boy who doesn’t want any new friends, and is cold and aloof from the get go.
Kody’s father is a rather powerful witch who takes a liking to Lumine. He hires the young pup to be Kody’s new guard dog. Lumine’s job is to follow Kody wherever he goes, and make sure he doesn’t get into any trouble or get hurt. Sounds easy enough, right? Well, not when he’s the biggest target in school for bullies. Kody is not particularly well-liked in school. He has no friends, other than Lumine, who he refuses to accept as a friend. He also has virtually no magic potential. Any time he uses magic, he begins to bleed from the mouth. Almost as if the magic is destroying his insides. Things only go downhill from here. How will these two unlikely friends get through it all? You’ll have to read Lumine on Webtoon to find that out!
The art in Lumine is nice. It’s a stylized mix between anime and cartoon that blends together really well. It’s more detailed than a normal cartoon, but less detailed than most anime art styles. The only problem with the art is that it’s very limited to itself. By this I mean that each frame is focused entirely on what is happening in the foreground. There is little to no background at all. Each frame is separated by the white of the page behind it, which can be a bit jarring with such simplistic panels.
More so, a good majority of the frames throughout this comic have white backgrounds. You see whomever is important at the moment, like Lumine or Kody, in a close up of their face surrounded by white with a darker gradient. It’s a style that seems to have been purposefully chosen. Just not a style that works well for myself personally.
However, if this isn’t an issue for you, then I would still recommend this comic. While the story does start off slowly, it gains momentum quickly. You’ll soon want to know everything that happened to Lumine and how he ended up where he did. Or Kody, what will happen to him? Will he get better at using magic? The more you read, the more you will want to know. Check it out on Webtoon today. You won’t regret it.
Lumine updates every Sunday and is currently on episode 91.

Lumine
An engaging comic, well worth the read for the story alone. The art is nice, though it doesn't have particularly detailed backgrounds, you still understand perfectly what you need to for the story to make sense. Check it out!
