Devil Number 4

Throughout the years, there have been many stories written about making deals with devils. Most stories depict the demons as beasts that wait at a crossroad, that you must summon with some sort of magic ritual. Other times the devils will just appear on their own. Usually attracted by some magical item. What if I told you that everything we know about making a deal with a devil is actually wrong? That devils simply look like we do, and that they don’t wait to be summoned? In fact, the only part we have correct about all of this is the price you must pay to get what it is you desire. That of course, is your soul. Join me for this Webtoon Review of Devil Number 4 to find out what a contract with a devil is really like.
“When a down on her luck student runs out of money -and hope- It’s time for the devil to make his entrance and give her an offer she can’t refuse.” This is the first sentence of the tagline for Devil Number 4, and it’s a good starting point to help me introduce our protagonist. Hanna Yoon is a 21-year-old college student. She has no money. Has bad luck with jobs. She has no close friends or even family. Now she has run out of hope as well. She is the perfect target for a devil who needs to sign a contract quickly, well, almost perfect. The only issue with Hanna is that she doesn’t wish for anything. Hanna has become so numb to her situation that she has no desires at all.
This actually makes her more appealing to a devil, though! If you can secure a contract with a client who has no desires, you can secure a contract with anyone. This makes you a valuable asset to the corporation Satan runs. That’s right, essentially, devils are just corporate men and women in suits, trying to get lucrative business contracts. Think of them as lawyers or stockbrokers. The only difference here is, once again, they deal in souls. Not stocks.
The particular devil who comes to Hanna in her time of need is called No. 4. Devils do not have names and only go by number. The lower the number, the more “elite” the devil is. This just represents how good at their job they are. The elite devils are sort of like celebrities to other devils. They are also generally stronger or more powerful. The same is true for No. 4, though he is certainly not the strongest devil by any means. Read the comic for yourself, and you’ll find out exactly what I mean.
The art in this comic is nice. I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite by any means, but it’s certainly not bad, either! The character designs are the best part. They are well-drawn, for the most part, and the facial expressions are very captivating. You can tell just how each character is feeling in every panel, and it’s done very well!
I would say my biggest issue with the art is that the characters are really the only things that are detailed. The backgrounds are both plain and plainly colored. They are quite boring most of the time. Of course, this is because the characters tell the story, and they are the most important aspect, but I still personally feel like this comic lacks a little bit of depth because of this. On rare occasions, we get backgrounds that are nice! There is a scene in Episode 50 where Number 4 is washed ashore. I feel that if there were more panels with this kind of action, I would enjoy the style more. This has nothing to do with the artist’s ability, though. Their work is, again, quite nice! The stylistic choice they made just isn’t for me.
Will the devil and his client become unlikely friends? Will Hanna realize a desire and sign the contract? What will happen now that she knows of devils and contracts? Will her life ever be the same? Will it get better? Or worse? Check out Devil Number 4 on webtoon to find out!
