WitchSpring3 Re:Fine – The Story Of Eirudy is a port of a mobile game. The WitchSpring series follows witches who brew stuff, go on adventures, and fight monsters. They are solid RPGs on the mobile platform, especially when you consider that they can all be played for less than $5 each. WitchSpring3 Re:Fine – The Story Of Eirudy is an upgraded version, and it carries the much heftier price tag of $39.99. So are the upgrades worth the “Switch tax?”
Those who haven’t played any of the WitchSpring games will be delighted to know that every series is a standalone experience. Like Final Fantasy, every game features its own protagonist and storylines that have nothing to do with what’s in the other games. WitchSpring3 follows a witch who lives a life secluded in a forest. There, she hides from witch hunters and tries to get puppets to chat with her and overcome loneliness. One day, a young man stumbles into her forest and suddenly the fate of humanity is at stake.
Throughout the game, players will gather materials, engage in turn-based battles, and brew potions. WitchSpring3 has an interested growth system where the players will gain materials from exploration and defeating enemies. Those materials will then be used to brew potions and grow the protagonist’s stats. WitchSpring3 doesn’t utilize traditional leveling up, which is kind of refreshing.
The player’s party consists of the puppets that they make, which can vary in stats and skills. Players can use traditional attacks and spells, giving WitchSpring3 a fairly generic combat system. It’s not too difficult and with decent pacing a little grinding, the difficulty is just right. The experience can get stale, but that’s okay because the main story is only around 10 hours.
There aren’t too many upgrades in content, but it would be dishonest to call WitchSpring3 just a mobile game. The visuals and voice acting are improved in this version. The game is also made with a controller in mind, so the controls feel much better than they do on mobile. Still, there isn’t enough here to justify the price tag, especially when you consider some of the alternatives on the console.
While the game is visually appealing with cute character designs, the rest of the presentation severely suffers. To start, the script is riddled with grammatical errors. The errors aren’t the only thing wrong with the script either. The dialogue just feels unnatural throughout the game.
WitchSpring 3 is cute and fun, but it falls short in many ways. It’s just too short and is riddled with too many writing errors to justify the full price. If someone is dying for an RPG, WitchSpring3 Re:Fine – The Story Of Eirudy will do, but don’t expect a masterpiece.
