Medieval fantasy games are pretty common on PSVR. Skyrim, The Wizards, and the Mage’s Tale are a few to come to mind and those are just the good ones. Still, the genre hasn’t been fully recognized yet, which is a shame since the genre tends to prioritize immersion in some form. Fortunately, Shadow Legend VR is here to not only give us a new fantasy game to play but to give us one of the best on the platform.
Shadow Legend VR looks quite generic at a glance, but once you put on the headset and explore a bit, it quickly becomes clear that this game is special. Players will begin in a chapel that acts as the tutorial room. They will learn how to walk, pick up items, and defend themselves. There isn’t too much in the tutorial’s mechanics that is surprising, but from the moment the player starts they will realize that things just feel different. The environments look incredibly clear, much more than what I am used to seeing through PSVR’s lenses. Movement feels great, and while the combat is a bit underwhelming, just about everything else seems refreshing and fulfilling.
Shadow Legend VR emphasizes exploration, and this is what the game is best at. Not long after the tutorial, players get the opportunity to explore tons of rooms and environments. Each room is full of coins and collectibles to look for. Players will climb ladders, hang from ropes, and find other ways to obtain hard to reach items. Every room feels like it is full of opportunities, and this is one of the feel games where most players will feel compelled to explore every nook and cranny.
In addition to the collectibles, there is just plenty to do in Shadow Legend VR. The environments are full of items to interact with, and most of them are there just for fun. Feeding horses, playing with dogs, and blacksmithing are just a few things that players can do for fun. The best part is that most of these activities are fun. There is so much to do in the world of Shadow Legend VR that naturally extends the playtime of the game.
The combat is a mix of satisfying and frustrating. Players can fight enemies with a few different tools like swords, magical staves, and bows. The swordplay feels rather underwhelming but is certainly serviceable. The dismemberment of enemies is limited to specific points of the limb at particular times, which removes the immersion a bit. Blocking feels good, but the gameplay feels a touch slow overall. The ranged forms of battle feel great though, especially the bow and arrow. The accuracy is consistent and fair, making it satisfying to use.
As mentioned before, Shadow Legend VR is a great looking VR title. The environments are crisp and well rendered. Regardless of the distance, the settings are clear and easy to look at. The character models, whether they are friend or foe, look a bit stiff. Still, that doesn’t stop Shadow Legend VR from being easy on the eyes. The sound design is great too, with catchy medieval themes and satisfying combat noises.
Shadow Legend VR is a great VR experience that is only marred by lackluster swordplay. If players want a world to explore and get lost in, this is a great one to jump into.
