Sega Ages Space Harrier
SEGA
Rail Shooter
Nintendo Switch
Sega Ages is a series of ports featuring SEGA’s classic catalog of arcade video games. The series has existed since the PS2 era and has continued through console generations. Now, a selection of SEGA’s classics are making their way to Switch. A few titles such as Sonic The Hedgehog are already available, and the latest release is Space Harrier.
Space Harrier is a third-person rail shooter that features pseudo-3D graphics to give an experience that was rather unique for its time. The arcade title that released in 1985 was positively received and led to two sequels on home consoles. For $7.99, a new generation can experience the flagship shooter.
Sega Ages Space Harrier is a rather straightforward port, as it doesn’t add to the gameplay of the original game. Players can run, fly, and shoot through 18 fairly short stages and strive for a high score. The gameplay is rather simple, but it being enjoyable largely relies on nostalgia. The controls are clunky, with the Switch’s stick requiring some getting used to. The action is fast-paced, with enemies approaching the player’s screen quickly, need fast reflexes in order to avoid a game-over. Flying around is pretty fun for a while, but the gameplay won’t last players too long without people to compete against for the high score.
Fortunately, there is a little extra added to this port, including some features like an easier game mode, online rankings, time trials, and fun filters. None of these features will really add tons of replayability aside from the rankings. The filters are neat, but they don’t really bring too much to the experience.
The game’s production is admirable when you consider when it released. The main character’s voice is motivating, making this a feel-good title despite the breakneck speed. The music is catchy, and I often found myself humming the tunes after turning off my Switch. The fake 3D effects work well, and it is easy to forget just how old it is. The graphics feel like they came out 5 years later, which compliments the fast pace well. The colors are vibrant, and the various stages have a lot of visual diversity.
I didn’t get to experience Space Harrier when it released, so I am glad that I finally get to see what all the buzz was about. I had a fun time playing through, but I can’t see myself playing it again for quite some time. With the right player though, Space Harrier will give many hours of fun as veterans try to master the stages for the highest possible score.
