Nintendo Switch
Sega Ages is a series of ports featuring SEGA’s classic catalog of arcade video games. The series has existed since the PS2 era and has continued through console generations. Now, a selection of SEGA’s classics is making their way to Switch. A few titles such as Sonic The Hedgehog are already available, and the latest release is Puyo Puyo.
Puyo Puyo is a puzzle game in which players compete to match falling blocks. The arcade title that released in 1991 was positively received and led to many sequels and spinoffs. For $7.99, a new generation can experience the flagship puzzler.
The gameplay is simple enough: Guide falling blocks and match colors. The blocks look like cute little slime creatures and include two different blobs. Sometimes they are the same color, sometimes they aren’t. Lining up the blocks and matching four like-colored blocks results in those blocks disappearing, which can result in other blocks falling. Chaining is possible and is one of the more satisfying parts of Puyo Puyo. It feels different than Tetris, but that doesn’t mean it is lesser than. This is a game that requires different strategies and does well at challenging players in both solo and competitive play.
Puyo Puyo is one of the better Sega Ages ports. It includes online play, which is a welcome addition for a puzzle game like this one. The game features local multiplayer as well. There are also online leaderboards for players to participate in. The amount of content is welcome, giving this worthy game the port it deserves.
There is a multitude of filters and background wallpapers for players to choose from, but they only add a small visual flair. The game also features both the international and Japanese version of Puyo Puyo, which is a nice addition. The amount of customization is nice, especially when you consider how simple this port is.
Aesthetically, Puyo Puyo dominates the competition. The simple slimes falling are much more entertaining to look at than boring blocks. The graphics are simple but full of charm as well. The borders around the actual game are full of life, calling back to the days of classic anime and manga. Overall it is a cute game, despite its obvious age.
Puyo Puyo is one of the best Sega Ages releases so far. It’s full of charm and utilizes online play in a way that the other Sega Ages titles don’t. While some of the newer releases in the series have modernized things a bit, this is still an entertaining puzzler, especially for the price.
