We don’t get enough RPGs that utilize horror. When thinking of the two genres together, there isn’t a lot outside of Parasite Eve and Omori. There isn’t much natural intersection, and considering that both genres are niche, the appeal probably isn’t wide enough to invest in. Still, it’s neat when it happens.
Raging Bytes is KEMCO’s latest RPG, and while much of it is familiar when it comes to its formula, it does stand out as a horror RPG that skillfully intertwines nostalgia, some atmosphere, and solid turn-based gameplay.
Raging Bytes delivers a nostalgic plotline that pays homage to classic zombie movies. As players embark on this apocalyptic adventure, they step into the shoes of Ben, a police officer who awakens in a world ravaged by the undead. Alongside other survivors, players must navigate the treacherous landscape, battling hordes of zombies to ensure their survival.
The game offers an engaging turn-based combat system that adds a strategic layer to the experience. Players must carefully manage their resources and choose their battles wisely, which is a nice nod to survival horror games. The turn-based battles aren’t exceptional, but they are serviceable, with a mechanic that forces players to use finite bullets for a safe ranged attack, or use close ranged attacks that will result in players losing some health. It’s not difficult, but it’s at least unique.
Embracing the charm of retro gaming, Raging Bytes showcases nice pixel art visuals reminiscent of classic video games. The intentional departure from modern high-resolution graphics works in its favor, capturing the essence of a lost era and creating a unique atmosphere.
Raging Bytes is a commendable RPG that successfully intertwines horror and nostalgia. With its engaging turn-based combat, resource management mechanics, and charming visuals, the game stands out as a memorable RPG in KEMCO’s library.
Raging Bytes isn't innovative, but it's nice to see a horror themed RPG every now and then.
