Another text-heavy beverage game has made it’s way to the Nintendo Switch. I meant “another” in the best way possible. VA-11 Hall-A and Coffee Talk are some of my favorite video games on the console. Necrobarista originally appeared on Apple arcade and PC in 2020. Now Nintendo Switch players are being treated to the definitive edition of the game with Necrobarista: Final Pour.
Necrobarista: Final Pour is a visual novel that is linear, but compensates that with a compelling story. The Terminal is a coffee shop that isn’t exactly known for excellent coffee or service. What makes The Terminal so special is that it acts as a haven for those who have died before they move on. For up to 24 hours, souls can visit The Terminal to gather their thoughts and make peace.
The cast of Necrobarista: Final Pour is fantastic, with tons of personalities that make the five hour experience special. Maddy the shopkeeper is more-or-less the protagonist, but the surrounding cast and the stories of the customers are just as impactful. There really isn’t much gameplay at all in this game. Even for a visual novel, there aren’t really any decisions to be made. It’s linear, with no branching paths. Players are just here for the ride. While that isn’t for everyone, it’s a special experience for those who enjoy this type of experience.
Necrobarista isn’t only unique among visual novels for its approach to gameplay. It’s unique visually as well, with 3D anime-style visuals. The models don’t have any crazy creative designs, but they look clean and are visually appealing. The Terminal has a big glowing tree that looks beautiful and suits the place well. The environments are otherwise unremarkable, but they don’t look bad. The story is accompanied by a stellar soundtrack by Kevin Penkin (Made in Abyss) and Jeremy Lim.
Necrobarista: Final Pour is a solid visual novel that is touching and immersive. Final Pour has a few extra side stories, making this the best way to enjoy this little tale.
