Rhythm
Aside from arcades, handheld consoles are the best way to enjoy rhythm games. There is something nice about turning on your device, quickly playing a couple of songs, and going on with your day. On the Switch, rhythm games that allow for flexibility in control options get bonus points, as they make the portability that much more convenient. MUSYNX is a rhythm game that checks just about every box, delivering a fun and quirky rhythm game.
As far as gameplay goes, it doesn’t get much more simple than MUSYNX. Players will pick their desired song and go straight into the game. There are four button keys at the bottom of a track. Notes scroll from the top of the screen and when they meet the line at the bottom of the screen, the player must hit the button that corresponds with the correct key. It’s a typical rhythm game mechanic that you’ll find in games like Guitar Hero and Deemo.
Despite how simple the mechanics are, the gameplay is addictive. Some notes need to simply be tapped. A single button press with good timing will award the player with points. Other notes need to be held for a certain amount of time. Sometimes players will find themselves hitting two notes simultaneously, or even holding one note while tapping others. MUSYNX can be as accessible or as difficult as players want, adding to the wide appeal of the game.
There is a small variety of options in MUSYNX that allow players to tailor the experience to their tastes and skill levels. There is a “Sound Enhancer” that plays the beat’s key sounds for the player regardless of their own performance. With the setting completely off, the songs will sound disjointed and broken if the player misses notes. This can be toggled from fully automatic, to strong, weak, and to no sound enhancer at all. In addition to this, the player can tweak the speed in which notes fall down the screen, challenging players with faster reaction times. Finally, players can adjust the location timing as a means of calibrating the audio. It would be nice if there was an automatic way of doing this since getting perfect timing can take a bit.
There are a couple of control options as well, once again catering to various skill levels. Players can choose from four-button or six-button controls. Playing with six buttons is significantly harder than four, especially in the beginning when the player isn’t familiar with the mapping. Players can also choose between easy and hard versions of each song. MUSYNX also supports touch screen controls, making the gameplay work a bit like a mini piano. The touch controls work wonderfully, though the game is significantly easier when buttons aren’t used.
The music is varied, from pop to techno to even 8-bit tunes. There are over 92 songs to choose from in MUSYNX ensuring that there is at least something for everyone to enjoy. Most of the tracks feature fun and catchy C-Pop vocalists adding to the charm of the music. Fans of the genres will absolutely love the song selection. Those who aren’t too fond of C-Pop might have a harder time going through all of the songs. Finding a favorite song can be frustrating at times, as the list is simply a horizontal line for players to scroll to. A feature that allows players to choose their favorites for quick access would be appreciated. For now, there isn’t a feature like this.
It’s a good thing that MUSYNX‘s gameplay is so solid, because there isn’t much outside of the core game. There aren’t any extra modes for players to explore. There isn’t even a proper tutorial. The game is a prime example of minimalism, which kind of makes the whole package feel a bit cheaper. Still, the bright colors, fun visuals, and cheery tunes make all of this worth it.
MUSYNX is an enjoyable rhythm game that trades flashy features for solid gameplay. The tracklist is huge and varied in genres, adding to the value of the package. Those who want a great rhythm game that will give many hours of entertainment should certainly consider MUSYNX.
