Moonlighter: Between Dimensions is Moonlighter‘s first paid DLC, and it offers a decent amount of content for players who have bested the base game’s campaign. It’s only available as post-game content, so it might be worth holding off on picking this one up until you have finished the story. For those who have finished Moonlighter, you will be treated to more of the dungeon crawling and shopkeeping that you love.
Moonlighter: Between Dimensions emphasizes gameplay content rather than story, with little being added to the game’s lore. Instead, players get to fight new enemies, obtain new equipment, and explore a new interdimensional dungeon. There are also some new items, which naturally means that the shop gets a few upgrades as well.
As mentioned before, there aren’t really any new mechanics introduced, and instead, players will be doing the same thing they have always been doing, just with a few new toys. There is a new set of weapons, including a new short sword, big sword, bow, and spear. There are also new trick weapons that bring a lot of potential to the combat but also come with various drawbacks. A few strategic decisions need to be made when equipping them, but the results can be satisfying. The trick weapons can also be a huge inconvenience, and some players will find themselves wanting to avoid them completely. The new armor isn’t remarkable and simply helps to strengthen players and make dungeon runs easier.
Speaking of dungeon runs, the new mini-dungeon is fairly challenging, with a few mini-bosses for players to overcome. It’s a fun time and fans of the original gameplay loop will enjoy the challenges that the dungeon brings. The little story that is told is fun enough, but like the main story, it is far from the best part of the expansion.
The changes to the shop are mostly just cosmetics, which is a bit disappointing. As charming as the shopkeeping mechanic in Moonlighter is, it’s pretty shallow. This was a great opportunity to add some depth to the game.
Still, there are a few tweaks that slightly change the experience. New customers change the way the player will sell products. There are also new thieves to cause trouble in the shop. There is even a bird that bothers the customers. The new shop features (cosmetics aside) are all included in the patch with the expansion, giving everyone a bit more content to enjoy.
Fans of the gameplay loop should enjoy the few extra hours they get to spend with Moonlighter: Between Dimensions. There isn’t much new content, but what is added is solid and pleasant. If you found yourself tiring out of the game’s mechanics, this package won’t be for you. Still, at the price, this is a solid expansion to a fun game.
