Might & Magic is an incredibly long-running franchise that has mostly fizzled away. Still, a couple of spinoffs through the 2000s kept the series relevant, and none more than Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, a unique puzzle game that debuted on the Nintendo DS. Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes is an enchanting marriage between Might & Magic universe and the match-three-style puzzle gameplay that was popular on mobile platforms at the time. Now, a new generation of players can enjoy the beloved title with Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes – Definitive Edition.
Few games merge genres as well as Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes – Definitive Edition does. A glance at the gameplay will show that it looks a lot like similar games in the puzzle genre, but it does stand out in a few ways to give it the RPG twist that makes it so special. Players must match three units vertically or horizontally to attack or defend. As the player progresses, the puzzles will get more difficult and the number of moves that players will be able to take will be limited. Players will have access to a diverse party with special abilities that shake up the puzzles, and the sense of progression feels great and satisfying.
A significant contributor to that sense of progression is the game’s RPG elements. Units will level up after battles, and completing sidequests is a nice way to flesh out the world while strengthing the player’s units. Unfortunately, there could be a lot more depth. There is no significant amount of unit customization, as they are mostly locked on their own progression paths. Still, players who love to watch their characters level up and perform more effectively will find that this progression is sufficient, especially because the story and characters are so likable.
The refined multiplayer modes offer rewarding experiences that significantly upgrade the game’s value. Online and local modes with 1v1 and 2v2 battles that can include bots are delightful. There is a large roster of units to choose from to keep the game spicy as players develop their own strengths and metas. There is even a pass-and-play mode, which is nice for accessibility.
There is plenty of content for newcomers, but returning fans will be treated to a host of new features in this definitive edition. The visuals look great with high-resolution character portraits and a new UI that is both clean and intuitive. This edition features quite a few quality-of-life improvements and rebalanced units to make the experience silky smooth both during the story mode and online. Finally, some new DLC is included that gives new content and an additional multiplayer boss for players to take down.
Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes – Definitive Edition is a captivating blend of puzzle and RPG genres, breathing new life into the beloved game The game’s RPG elements, although somewhat limited in unit customization, offer a satisfying sense of progression through unit leveling and engaging sidequests. The refined multiplayer modes further elevate the experience, providing engaging battles with many approaches With improved visuals, quality-of-life enhancements, and additional DLC content, this edition offers a delightful adventure for both newcomers and returning fans alike.
