Hide & Dance!
Hap Inc. & Kemco
Hap Inc. is carving a niche into the game industry that is hard to deny. Their quirky games with simple aesthetics are full of charm and personality. At the same time, they have the presentation of a simple flash game. Of course, no one will mind the simple art style these games have because they come with tons of humor. Hide & Dance! is making its way to PlayStation 4 with Kemco publishing it, bringing some fun tunes and big laughs to the console.
You likely won’t find a rhythm game that’s simpler than Hide & Dance! Players will choose a song, then they will try to time button presses with the beat of the song. On the PlayStation 4 version, players will use the Left and Down directional pad buttons in addition to Cross and Circle.
In the background is a person who is streaming a dance performance. Behind that character is a door that will occasionally open, with a family member checking on them. The player will need to hit L1 and R1 to hide their dance moves, thus saving their pride. If the player gets caught dancing, they instantly fail regardless of how they are doing on the song. As a result. players will constantly need to be aware of their surroundings while they try to get the best score popular.
Songs are short, with each one being less than 90 seconds. They vary in genre, but most of them are J-Pop tunes. The music is lively and catchy, with 20 songs to choose from. A couple of the songs are from other games by the developer. One or two of them are remixed classic songs, which are fun enough.
Each song comes with three difficulties. Once a player hits every note successfully in a song, they unlock the next difficulty. Even the hardest difficulties aren’t overly difficult though for rhythm game veterans. Even with the constant need to hide throughout the song, this isn’t a difficult game. All of the content can be unlocked and perfected within a couple of hours. Still, it’s worth it for the charm and experience that Hide & Dance! provides. There is a multiplayer mode that adds a bit more replayability to the experience as well.
The visuals are simple, with hand-drawn characters and minimalist backgrounds. The only thing behind the character is a door and a plain color filling the background. The menus are just as barebones, but this isn’t too much of a problem.
It’s a short experience, but Hide & Dance! is a rhythm game that will bring a big smile to any player’s face. It’s silly, cute, and has catchy tunes. All of this is really all one could ask from a rhythm game.
