Disgaea 7 is the latest installment in the renowned strategy RPG series known for its in-depth character leveling, impactful combat system, and over-the-top narrative set in the Netherworld. This chapter takes place in the Netherworlds of Hinomoto, inspired by feudal Japan and the way of bushido.
In terms of gameplay, Disgaea 7 maintains the series’ signature turn-based tactical battles with a grid-based combat system that offers deep strategic possibilities. Players can position their characters strategically and execute a wide range of outlandish special moves, including the ability to toss allies across the battlefield. The game boasts absurdly high numbers and a variety of unique character classes like “The Big Eye” and “The Zombie Maiden.”
One of Disgaea 7’s standout features is its lightheartedness, evident in its over-the-top special moves and ridiculous attack animations. Watching your characters perform these feats of strength and magic adds to the game’s unique charm, setting it apart from other tactical RPGs.
The Netherworlds serve as a visually striking backdrop for the game’s adventures, featuring diverse environments ranging from lava-filled volcanoes to haunted forests. The art style combines 2D and 3D elements, enhancing the game’s overall zaniness. Character designs are colorful and exaggerated, perfectly complementing the game’s quirky nature.
Disgaea 7 introduces several new elements to the series, including Jumbification, which allows characters to attack any part of the stage, and Hell Mode, where characters can unleash their full power for more experience points and special skills. Item Reincarnation lets players transform items into powerful treasures while preserving their original characteristics.
Additionally, the game includes Online Ranked Battles for the first time in the series. Players can match up against others worldwide and engage in strategic combat with automated commands. We didn’t get a chance to test the online battle quality before launch, so stay tuned for coverage on that later.
Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless
Disgaea 7 aims to rectify the issues of its predecessor by offering improved performance, streamlined gameplay, and a return to the series' fun and absurd style. It retains the core elements that fans love while introducing exciting new features and classes, making it a worthy addition to the Disgaea series.
