SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS straight away at the top of this review. Dick Grayson gets his inspiration for Nightwing in this episode. With the season ending in just a few weeks, it had to happen somewhere, and this is the episode. Some other stuff happens, of equal importance, but that’s my main takeaway from this episode.
The Titans split up (again), and things aren’t going great for them. Dick Grayson, purposefully attacking cops in an airport, gets seven years in prison for it. Gar Logan is still trying to help Conner after Conner attacked some cops and put them in the hospital (do you see a theme?). Rachel is on her own after leaving with Donna Troy and then leaving Donna Troy after 10 minutes. And that’s who we follow in this episode.
I am loving how much we’ve seen Ryan Potter as Beast Boy these past few episodes. He’s just been in the background for this season, and now is his time to shine. Plus his interactions with Joshua Orpin as Superboy are great. By the time this episode is over, they’re both in captivity by Cadmus, and things are a bit iffy with that. Rachel left Donna Troy and is back on her “homeless teen” beat. It’s mostly to showcase “Hey, this girl can’t really control her powers yet, and it’s kind of bad”. She saves another homeless girl from an abusive boyfriend, and then her powers kill the boyfriend. Donna Troy is searching for her, but she’s kind of an afterthought in the episode.
The main part of the episode is Dick Grayson being in prison. He’s not in the business of helping people anymore, and that puts him in contention with a prison guard who wants him to be a snitch. Of course, he’s a hero at heart, and his lone wolf act doesn’t last too long. His cellmates are planning an escape, and he can see it’ll get them killed. Props to Brenton Thwaites, I love him as Robin. He’s come a long way from the first season, where he acts the part, but isn’t believable when it came to a fight scene. I can believe it now, though I’m sure there’s a stuntman in play. By the time the credits roll, we’ve seen him fight with/throw a baton, so it’s clear where we’re going with it.
Towards the end of the episode, Dick’s cellmate informs him of Alazul. In his culture, he’s a legend that comes down in the night that protects and saves people. If you google translate “Alazul” or “ala azul” it translates to blue bird. By the italicized words, you can see where it’s going. My first reaction was to roll my eyes, but the more I thought about it, the more I like it. It’s a lot better than a Kryptonian bird or taking Jimmy Olsen’s old codename. But that’s the episode. Overall, it’s pretty good. There are the usual bad spots (the special effects for Raven and Krypto) but I’m really over complaining about those at this point. We’ve only got three episodes left and I’m excited to see where it goes.

Titans Season 2 Episode 10
"Fallen" the tenth episode of Titans' second season gives us the origin of this universe's Nightwing. The team is still broken up, and some are in some predicaments. Fantastic performances all around from the actors, especially Brenton Thwaites and Ryan Potter. The special effects in use are still bad, but really not anything to point out anymore.
