Exit: The Game – The House of Riddles
KOSMOS
1-4 Players
Playtime: 1-2 Hours
The Exit series is one of KOSMOS’ most popular lines of gaming. Each game takes advantage of the wildly popular escape room craze and puts it on the tabletop. Exit: The Game – House of Riddles puts players in a situation where they are trapped in a house of riddles.
House of Riddles doesn’t just throw players into a puzzle-solving situation. It comes with a simple but neat little story involving three detectives. It’s a neat little experience that adds a bit more depth than games like Doctor Esker’s Notebook. It also does a fine job of creating an experience similar to actual escape rooms. There is a chain of puzzles that will help the players find a way out of the house of riddles.
The game can be enjoyed by a group of people, or alone. The puzzles in this entry aren’t too difficult, especially if there is a group trying to solve it. If a puzzle is too difficult there are hint cards to help guide the players in the right direction. The easier puzzles and hint system makes it family-friendly. Children can likely solve the riddles with some parental guidance.
It’s hard to go too in-depth without revealing too much. Most of the joy in House of Riddles is in solving the puzzles and discovering the next step. While the puzzles aren’t too difficult, it is satisfying to find the solutions.
The game’s art for the riddle cards adds a bit of atmosphere to the game. This is the complete package as far as presentation goes. Every riddle is relevant to the theme, keeping everything cohesive. The components are of decent quality, with fine cards and a couple of neat tools for solving the riddles.
Once you finish playing House of Riddles, there isn’t much more to do. Like Legacy games, players will mark on, fold, and destroy the game components. This game is meant to be a one-and-done experience. It’s short, but satisfying overall, especially if you are a fan of solving puzzles.
This is one of the easier Exit titles, so if you have a good experience this one, you’ll find yourself challenged with future entries. Fans of puzzle games should certainly consider giving The House of Riddles a try, especially if you want to use it to bond with your family.
