“Danger is a party card game that is inspired by warning signs amped up to the hilariously absurd. It is a game about bizarre situations and the bizarre ways in which people are saved from them.”
Danger the Game is a party game that relies on storytelling to create a fun experience for its players. Each player is dealt three tool cards and three skill cards. The victim (The judge) of a round will draw and reveal a danger card, which puts them in a dangerous situation (Such as being hugged too tight by a depressed squid). The other players will each play a tool and skill, reveal them, and describe how their cards will save the judge. The most convincing player will receive the danger card as a point, and then the next player will be the victim.
There is a lot of potential for Danger the Game to be a romp at a party, but the game’s success hinges on an engaged and creative group. We played this game over a few sessions with a small variety of groups, and our enjoyment varied greatly from group to group. We had a wildly fun time over a couple of sessions, with engaged players coming up with bizarre stories. Everyone was creative, willing to suspend disbelief, and highly invested in our game. Danger the Game is a wonderful experience during times like these, which had some players rolling on the floor laughing.
Other times, the game dragged on, mostly due to players who simply couldn’t come up with interesting stories. Most of the situations are ridiculous, and the skills and tools that are used to rescue victims from danger are even more unbelievable. A serious group of gamers will have a hard time accepted Danger for what it is. Danger isn’t for everyone, but no game needs to be, and those who connect with the game’s scenarios will love it.
Danger embraces its theme with a cool aesthetic featuring minimalistic art. Everything looks like the warning signs you see on the street, nature trails, and other potentially dangerous areas. The danger cards have fun, simple art that adds flavor to the hazards. Everything would look like a normal sign if it weren’t for some of the cards having things like ants carrying a human away or a squid hugging a person. Unfortunately, this fun art style doesn’t exist on any card except for the Danger cards, and the tools, skills and plot twists don’t have the same amount of love on them. Still, the style looks works for the game, which looks simple but neat.
Danger is difficult to completely recommend to everyone, but it has a lot going for it. The game is most likely to appeal to both younger and light-hearted adults. Everyone in the group needs to have the ability to suspend their disbelief of this won’t work. Still, for the right crowd, this could be the perfect addition to a game night.
