Boop is a charming and engaging tabletop game that combines strategic depth with an adorable feline theme. In this review, we’ll delve into the game’s setup, pacing, interaction, replayability, and the delightful theme and components that make it a purr-fect choice for players of all ages.
A Brief How To Play
Setting up Boop is a breeze. The game’s components are minimalistic but effective. Players create a cozy kitten bed by flipping the box lid upside down and placing the mattress board on top. With 8 kitten meeples each, players build their own armies of adorable feline friends, while 8 cat meeples wait patiently for their turn.
The game unfolds on the mattress grid, where players take turns strategically positioning their kittens. When a kitten is placed next to another, it triggers a delightful “boop” effect, displacing adjacent kittens by one space. If a kitten tumbles off the bed, it returns to its owner’s pile. When three kittens align in a row, they’re replaced with cats, and the race to victory intensifies. Cats can boop cats and kittens, but can’t be booped by the smaller kittens. The player who lines up three cats in a row wins.

Pacing and Interaction
Boop strikes a remarkable balance between strategy and pace. Turns are concise, akin to a well-played game of Chess, making it accessible for all levels of players. Serious competitors will appreciate the brisk tempo, with turns lasting mere seconds, while younger or more casual players can relish the joy of sending kittens flying around the bed.
Boop‘s brilliance lies in its interactivity. Every move has consequences, and each placement influences the board and the players. It’s common to see meeples tumbling from all sides, including allied kittens. This continuous engagement ensures that players are always involved in the game. If a player loses focus for just a moment, they will lose just like they would in a game of Connect Four.
Replayability
Boop is a game that promises endless entertainment for those who relish strategic head-to-head battles like Chess or Hive. Its ever-changing dynamics and the potential for new tactics in each game guarantee that players will keep returning to it, seeking the thrill of victory and the joy of playful “boops.”
Theme and Components

Boop‘s charm lies in its delightful theme. While the concept could have been implemented with abstract components, the choice of adorable cats and kittens adds a layer of accessibility and whimsy to the game. With their detailed front and back designs, the screen-printed meeples enhance the overall aesthetic appeal and the sense of immersion in the feline world. The box flipping over to become a bed is such a cute idea. The board itself being a mattress pad is simple yet adorable and thematic. The entire package comes together to makes a special little game that will be a hit for most players.
