Spider-Geddon #3
Marvel Comics
Writer: Christos Gage
Artists: Carlo Barberi & Todd Nauck
I used to wonder why Spider-Man has so many “events” compared to other characters. Now I know it’s because A) he’s one of the most popular characters in the world. And B) he’s a good character that’s (for the most part) well written. So here we are now, with another Spider-Man centric event, Spider-Geddon, and so far, it’s pretty good.
The Inheritors are back and trying to figure out cloning technology so they can continue their immortality. The assembled group of Spiders has split into two factions. One side, led by Otto Octavius, is trying to kill the Inheritors. The other side, led by Miles Morales, doesn’t want blood on their hands, as is the Spider-Man way.
I like what’s going on in the main story, but I think the biggest draw for this is the different Spider people. There’s a good assortment at play, not at the scale of the original Spider-Verse, but that’s for the better. There are some new faces mixed with the old, but I won’t get into every character. The one that stands out most to me is Spiders-Man, a hive of spiders that think they are Peter Parker. That’s just…nightmare fuel. The split between the two sides does make it easier to keep track of who is who, which helps. I don’t feel like there are any real stakes right now. We have lost a couple of big names Spider-men, but I don’t at all think any headlining characters will die.
I like the art in this issue. To me, it feels a little more dynamic, with more shadow usage than previous issues, and I like it. With the number of characters, the individual designs are clear and present. No two Spider-men look the same. The action is good, and with all the characters it doesn’t get too messy. I think it’s more the characters, but I can’t tell the Inheritors apart from each other. They all just have a uniform victorian-ish look to them. It’s not a big problem, more just something I noticed, but all the spiders are squinting. With the exceptions of robots like S//DR and mask-less people like Silk, they’ve all got a hard time seeing stuff.
This is, so far, a fun comic book event. We’re moving along at a good pace, with this being the halfway point for the main series. The art is good, besides some minor things. The story is good, but it doesn’t feel like it has any weight behind it. The main attraction is definitely the different Spider-people, and there’s plenty in this issue. If you like Spider-Man, or multiversal stories, or both, this is a story for you.
Spider-Geddon #3
In Spider-Geddon #3 the two factions of Spider-Men take the fight to the Inheritors. The main plot isn't the strongest, but the art is good, and the highlight is the many different versions of Spider-Man interacting together.
