Comics are back! We are still getting into the groove of reading comics again so we don’t have a lot of picks in May. Still, check out the Sequential Team’s favorite comics from May 2020.
Marcus Orchard – Mercy #2
I love a good horror series, and Mirka Andolfo is setting up Mercy to be one of the best ones in recent memory. Mercy #2 adds tons of worldbuilding, suspense, and questions to the already enthralling series. The issue doesn’t spend as much time showing the reader gore as the previous issue did, but the relationships that are established raises the emotional stakes. Throw in Andolfo’s gorgeous, yet terrifying art and you have a hit. This is a series that everyone should be reading.
Ethan Maddux – Amazing Spider-Man #43
Obviously, there weren’t a ton of contenders for the pick of the month this time around, but I don’t want that fact to give off the impression that ASM #43 wouldn’t have had a chance otherwise. Even taken out of that context this issue is still one of the more enjoyable ones out of a run I have an intense soft spot for. Just by way of having Ottley on art, it’s already bound to be somewhat enjoyable, but Spencer also brings out the big guns in terms of scripting. The issue is jam-packed with wonderful Spider-Man action, quips, and internal/external conflicts. It has all those ingredients of a great Spidey issue, and its stellar execution takes it another step up the ladder.
Steven Martinez – DCeased: The Unkillables #3
My pick of May 2020 was between this and Avengers #33. But as much of an Avengers fanboy as I am, DCeased: The Unkillables #3 is just a better issue between the two. For this short, three-issue story, Tom Taylor still managed to deliver that emotional gut punch that I’ve come to love his writing for. He made me sad using characters I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. I’m sure there is at least one person who’s favorite character is The Creeper, but I have no clue who that is. Tom Taylor somehow made me sad for him. To top it off, while I have a few complaints about the art, it beautifully shows how violent and brutal fighting the undead in this series can be.
Chris Green – SPY x FAMILY Chapter 26
Midterm exams are coming up in Eden Academy, and earning a failing grade is out of the question if Anya Forger wants to continue her education. Unfortunately, midterms take place during the new moon, and under this lunar phase, Anya’s telepathic powers do not work. With cheating out of the question, Anya is forced to study in order to pass her exams and continue to support her father’s mission.
SPY x FAMILY continues to be one of the highlights every other week with its light-hearted humor and lovable characters. This chapter gives us Anya and Yuri interactions, something we haven’t seen before but ended up being the perfect pairing for comedic effect. SPY x FAMILY is best when it deals with the family dynamics and seeing Anya’s reactions to each of the character’s thoughts always puts a smile on my face. Fans of slice-of-life and comedy need to give this series a read. With only 28 chapters out, now is a great time to get started.
