The PC Engine is a relic of gaming history at this point, with tons of games throughout the early 90’s console run. One of those games that was likely forgotten is Moto Roader MC, the third racing game in the Moto Roader series.
Moto Roader MC is a top down racer where the entire track is on one screen and up to four little cars race against each other. Like one would expect from any racer from the era, the native controls are rather clunky and unintuitive. If players don’t want to play this piece of history as intended, Ratalaika Games has added a more natural control scheme as an alternative. I found that there is value in both control schemes, providing different crowds with different experiences.
There are over 20 tracks for players to race through, which certainly helps with the game’s longevity. Each course is rather unique, with some a little too simple while others have a lot going on. I found that most of the tracks are well balanced and enjoyable though.
Moto Roader MC is priced at a modest $7.99 so it isn’t surprising that there isn’t much to do outside of the racing against other players. There is no story mode or much content for solo players. Still, for a few evenings full of fun with friends, Moto Roader MC gets the job done.
Moto Roader MC is lacking in content, but makes up for it in value and a solid gameplay loop.
