Marvel Knights 20th (2018-) #6
Marvel Comics
Writer: Donny Cates
Artists: Kim Jacinto & Travel Foreman
The Marvel Universe has forgotten who the superheroes are. Not even the Superheroes remember who they were. But one by one, a small group of heroes are remembering their identities and are working together to make the world remember.
Gathering at the Baxter building, Daredevil, Elektra, Bruce Banner and The Punisher have to fight with the Black Panther. Going the way of all superhero team ups, they eventually work together to reach the machine that made the world forget the heroes. The only thing standing in their way is a room full of villains lead by the Kingpin, and a “golden dragon” guarding the machine.
I’ve been enjoying this miniseries. Donny Cates is a good writer, and gave us a mystery in the first issue that’s kept my interest high. But now that we’re at the end I think it falls a little flat. Just a little. I don’t want to get into every detail, but there’s a superhero ending, that really doesn’t change anything going forward. That’s also something that can (and is) said about any modern day “event” from either of the big two comic companies. But, we did get an ending to the mystery, and it’s not like it isn’t an entertaining story. I did enjoy the whole story, including this issue.
Kim Jacinto and Travel Foreman split the art in this issue and I think they both did a good job. The first half of the issue, where the heroes are fighting each other/the villains, it’s a little more gritty and a bit more dynamic. The second half, once they start dealing with the machine, things get a little lighter, and smoother. There’s not too much action in the back half, so the more still looking images work for me. Plus everything with the machine that makes the world forget about stuff feels more on the “fantasy” side of things, so I think the art works better for that kind of setting.
I like this miniseries, and there’s a lot to like about it. The art is great, and the two separate styles fit for the parts of the story this issue tells. Donny Cates is a good writer, and I think the story he’s telling has a satisfying ending. And it’s open enough for sequels or if Marvel ever wants to do a “Marvel Knights 30th”. I think if you’ve been reading this series you’ll enjoy this issue and its ending.
