Manga Review: One Piece Chapter 1107: I’ve Been Looking For You!!

    Mangaka: Eiichiro Oda

    Publisher: VIZ Media

Egghead has shaped up to be one of the best arcs in One Piece, with the perfect blend of spectacle, humor, and heartwrenching moments. Now that the tears for Kuma are starting to dry, everything is escalating quickly. Luffy is giving Saturn the business, the Blackbeard Pirates are still doing their shenanigans, and the giants are here!

As usual, Oda jumps around throughout the issue. Readers are first treated to an excellent introduction to the Giant Pirates as they enter the fray, including a quick recap on their role in the story so far. Most of the rest of the crew are trying to keep everything together, which consists of mostly banter in this issue. Zoro talks trash, Brook fails to understand the magnitude of their situation, and Jinbe works to get everyone on schedule. These are all short moments that don’t feel like much, but they are great little gags and are, of course, small pieces of a significant scene.

The highlight of this chapter is the conflict between Luffy, Bonney, Borsalino, and Saturn. Luffy continues to be the funniest shonen protagonist as he and Saturn finally butt heads and Bonney realizes who Luffy is. Meanwhile, Borsalino injects himself into the fray again, but is surprised by a counter with one of the best reaction faces in the series so far. This entire sequence that makes up the middle of the chapter is a delight. Oda’s art moves the action along naturally, showcasing Luffy’s new ability with excellent framing. The panels are all full of detail, yet they don’t hurt the pacing of the action.

While this is a fun chapter, there are a few question marks, especially when it comes to a Sanji move in this chapter. I understand that this is One Piece and some ridiculous things happen, but it would be nice to see Oda go into more detail about how Sanji pulled off this feat at some point. The explanation in this chapter doesn’t feel convincing – something more is happening.

Despite this one question mark, One Piece‘s 1107th chapter is a fun time. It feels like Egghead Island is ramping up towards its conclusion, and it is going to be a banger.

Marcus isn't good at a lot, but he is an expert at replaying Final Fantasy games despite there being a lot of good stuff out there. He also loves comics, board games, and anime. He thinks Chip Zdarsky is a treasure.
