Mieruko-chan Chapter 27
Yen Press
Mangaka: Tomoki Izumi
It looks like we’re finally getting an overarching plot, folks!
Chapter 27 finds Miko trapped in the woods surrounded by ghastly apparitions and the temple she visited with Hana nowhere in sight. As she attempts her usual strategy of ignorance, it doesn’t seem to work as there are spirits at every turn who know she can see them. When all hope seems lost, the two temple spirits suddenly appear and seemingly save Miko yet again. But are their intentions completely altruistic?
This chapter got me very excited about the future potential of the series. Many of the latest chapters have been introducing various side characters who can also see spirits similar to Miko, and we also now know that Hana has a powerful spiritual aura that attracts the things Miko sees. We also have a possible antagonistic character in the form of Romm Shindou and a returning ally in the form of the old fortune-teller woman Takeda. The world and the players have been introduced, and with this latest chapter, it seems like the consequences we all knew were hovering in the background since Miko gained the temple spirits’ assistance are now coming to a head.
As usual, the characters and art are the best part of the series. The characters are the heart of the story, and the majority of the humor comes from Miko’s reactions as she attempts to remain unfazed by the abominations she sees every chapter. Things become even more interesting, however, when characters are introduced that also see the spirits. While it’s funny to have characters like Hana around who have no idea the struggle that Miko is going through, it’s much more interesting when someone appears that clearly knows the situation at hand and tries to help Miko.
The art is a blend of beautiful and horrific, with adorable human characters and the terrifying monstrosities Miko is forced to face daily. The dichotomy between the two art styles adds to the humor and horror of the series and is a big reason why the premise works as well as it does.
This chapter has me stoked to read the next one. I can’t wait to see where the story goes in the future.
