Gokushufudou: The Way of the Househusband Chapter 54

Tatsu, Miku and Masa are faced with their latest obstacle: a mound of sweet and savory breads. In order to earn more Policure memorabilia, Miku purchased several breads that the gang is now tasked with eating.

The story for this chapter is simple and sweet: our three heroes facing off against a mountain of carbs. I will say that this chapter did not stand out to me at all; while the subject material was cute and provided a chuckle or two this did not really feel like a Gokushufudou chapter. Sure, Tatsu provided some classic cooking antics but the yakuza-turned-househusband gag was not played on at all. There are probably those that may think the gag will overplay itself and wear out, I think it is currently the strongest part of the series.

The characters are their usual selves, but as with my earlier criticism because they didn’t dip into the gag well often enough none of the characters could shine all that brightly. Tatsu and Masa work best when they play off their mafia personas in everyday life, and Miku works best when she plays off Tatsu. I felt that this chapter in particular didn’t offer any real opportunities for good gags or strong laughs.

The art is the best part of the issue, and the bread dishes Tatsu whip up look delectable. I don’t have any complaints in this department, but nothing especially dazzled me either. One of my favorite gags is Tatsu’s terrifying expression as he does something cute or nice, and it wasn’t utilized in this chapter which left me disappointed.

Gokushufuduou chapter 54 is a fine chapter, but it falls on the weaker side of the series for me. I’m not complaining though; a fine chapter for this series is still better than most things I read.
