Dragon Ball Super Chapter 68
VIZ
Mangaka: Akira Toriyama (Writer),Toyotaro (Artist)
Dragon Ball Super enters its new arc post-Moro with a galactic heist, a new cast of characters, and mentions of an old foe. These three elements in tandem just so happen to be the perfect recipe for an intriguing and engaging chapter.
Chapter 68 begins with Granolah, a member of the nearly-extinct Cerealiens, awaking from a nightmare. His past, it seems, is closely linked to Frieza’s army as well as the Saiyans. After the previous chapter’s heist, Granolah takes OG73-i in to receive a bounty. Meanwhile, Goku continues to train with Whis and learns that his level of mastery of Ultra Instinct is merely the first step on the path of truly utilizing the technique. Vegeta, who has long since rejected the idea of Ultra Instinct as it is “not his style”, is tempted by Beerus who says there are God of Destruction techniques that rival Ultra Instinct.
This chapter does a lot to get readers excited about the coming arc. For one, it already hints at greater heights for Goku and Vegeta to reach. This being Dragon Ball, it comes as no surprise that our heroes will continue growing stronger and learning new techniques. However, to have a concrete statement that Goku and Vegeta will potentially gain a new form or learn a new technique in this arc is definitely something to look forward to. On top of this, Granolah has a tragic relation with both Frieza and the Saiyan race, which not only hints at the arc’s potential conflict but all but promises the return of everyone’s favorite galactic emperor. Will we see the Saiyans and Frieza team up once again, or will the Cerealien accept the Saiyans as his allies against Frieza?
Aside from Granolah, there are a few other characters of note introduced in this chapter: the Heeters. Aside from their name (which is the direct opposite of the Cold Clan that Frieza belongs to), the Heeters seem to be a powerful force in the galaxy since Frieza died on Namek. It will be interesting to see what role this group plays in the arc, but from what we’ve seen so far at least some of their members have fighting potential.
As always, Toriyama’s writing brings the perfect balance of action and comedy to his work. Goku and Vegeta feel exactly as they always have and yet you can also tell that both characters have grown immensely over the years (especially Vegeta). And Toyotaro’s art style is nearly indistinguishable from his mentors’ in the best way. Dragon Ball Super feels exactly like the continuation of Dragon Ball Z that it was meant to be.
Chapter 68 is exactly what you’d want to see as the start of a new arc. Since the Tournament of Power, the Dragon Ball Super manga has continued to get more and more interesting, and just based on this chapter alone it doesn’t seem too farfetched to say that this next arc could be the best one yet. Moro gave us a lot of great moments, so here’s hoping Granolah can give us even more.
