Chainsaw Man Chapter 130
Mangaka: Tatsuki Fujimoto
Publisher: VIZ
Boy, this chapter really opened with a fantastic spread involving a chainsaw motorcycle.
Chainsaw Man‘s Falling Devil arc continues in chapter 130 with an action-filled romp that fully delivers. I feel like I’ve promised exciting battles before every chapter, only for Fujimoto to give us a quieter chapter than expected. Of course, those chapters have been thoroughly entertaining, but not for the reasons I expected. Just when I’m no longer expecting a wild ride and am content with just being the passenger at Fujimoto’s pace, we get this. It’s explosive, messy, and full of stellar panels from beginning to end.
It’s non-stop, without a single moment for the characters or readers to take a break. In fact, I’d wager that no more than two minutes pass throughout this entire chapter. We get to see cool stuff, and then it just ends. Anyone who wanted to see the arc progress a little might be disappointed because while there is plenty of eye candy, nothing truly progresses. It’s all on Denji’s new bike, and this chapter fully owns its identity.
Of course, this means that some of the things that make Chainsaw Man great are absent here. There isn’t any feeling of dread or sadness because everything happens so fast. There isn’t much humor, or even dialogue for that matter.
It looks great but has no substance. With all of the build-up, this is forgivable though. Seriously, the art is incredible. The issue is filled with spreads that have an insane amount of detail. No panel feels rushed, making the wait for this chapter more than worth it. The action flows naturally, and readers will never have to take a second look to understand a scene. This, of course, benefits the pacing. Readers feel compelled to go from panel to panel faster than Denji is driving, leading to a sort of adrenaline feeling.
