Black Cloak and Captain Marvel writer Kelly Thompson is teaming up with Captain America artist Mattia De Iulis to create The Cull. The two are joined by letterer Hassan Ostmane-Elhaou. This five-issue miniseries, which combines elements of horror and coming-of-age narratives, is scheduled to be released in August by Image Comics.
A slew of variant covers is slated for the debut issue, with covers by renowned talents including Lorenzo Ceccotti, Michael Walsh, Andrew J. Seles, Chris Shehan, Meredith Mcclaren, Dike Ruan, and Tula Lotay.
Thompson expressed her excitement about the collaboration, stating, “When Mattia reached out to partner on something creator-owned together, I was over the moon. What we came up with for The Cull is both horrifying and delightful, and of course stunningly gorgeous thanks to Mattia’s mind-blowing visuals.”
The Cull draws inspiration from the chilling atmosphere of Something is Killing the Children and blends it with the thrilling adventure reminiscent of The Goonies. The story follows a group of five friends who embark on a journey to shoot a short film on a forbidden rock near their hometown, shortly before they are set to go their separate ways. However, their true motive for visiting the forbidden location is far from what it seems, as one of them has concealed a life-altering lie that will forever change the course of their lives.
De Iulis added “I made my debut as a comic book artist with Kelly (on Jessica Jones), and I can’t believe I’m here now after five years working on the most beautiful project I could ever imagine! The Cull grabbed me from the first pages, as horror and mystery blend together to create a fantastic adventure!”
The Cull #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, August 16
