Tales From The Dark Multiverse: Flashpoint #1
DC Comics
Writer: Bryan Hitch
Artist: Byan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Scott Hanna, Alex Sinclair, & Jeremiah Skipper
I wasn’t a huge fan of the original Flashpoint if I’m going, to be honest. I mean let’s face it, who was? An altogether mediocre story that led to the dissolution of the DC Universe and the start of the New 52, which was just a set of mediocre book after mediocre book. I was hoping that Tales from The Dark Multiverse might breathe some new life into the book, maybe make me actually care about the book at all.
I’m sorry to say it did quite the opposite. It’s even managed to make me less excited for the future Tales From The Dark Multiverse.
There’s very little substance to the story here compared to the other Tales. Whereas Batman: Hush asked what would happen if the roles in the story were reversed, and The Death Of Superman went in-depth with an alternate, angry version of Lois Lane post-The Death Of Superman. Tales From The Dark Multiverse: Flashpoint just asks what would happen if Reverse-Flash won. And we already know the answer to that question, we’ve discovered it through his numerous appearances. It’s just not interesting at all. Bryan Hitch also wrote this book as well as being the artist, and it’s clear that doing both took a drastic toll on the quality of both the story of the book and the art of the book. It took me multiple reads to even work out what the final page even meant, that’s how bad this was.
Art-wise this just isn’t very appealing to me. While others may appreciate Bryan Hitch’s style, here it feels rushed and altogether lesser. Perhaps it’s due to the fact he also wrote the issue, but there’s nothing that really sticks out in this issue. Hell, some pages look downright ugly, with the colours and the lines just not meshing at all. Just so disappointing altogether. There have been some fantastic writers for Flash stories over the years, and some absolutely stellar Flash artists and it’s very clear that while Bryan Hitch may be good on other titles, he’s not either of those things for The Flash, or indeed for Tales From The Dark Multiverse.
Tales From The Dark Multiverse: Flashpoint is drab, boring, and utterly mediocre. It’s such an incredible disappointment in almost all regards, especially considering a dark multiverse Flashpoint had such incredible potential. It’s wild that a dark multiverse War of the Gods was better than a dark multiverse Flashpoint, but here we are. Hopefully, Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Crisis on Infinite Earths turns out better than this utter mess.

Extremely disappointing, I was hoping that this could be something special. Sadly, it's run of the mill fare.
