Marvel has been building up to Kitty Pryde and Colossus’ wedding for months now, but it has not been an exciting wait. While the characters have plenty of history throughout the X-Men comics, the couple has not had good chemistry as of late. The relationship and the reasons for their engagement have felt forced since X-Men Gold. Marvel is now trying to hype up the big event with a special featuring three stories.
Unfortunately, all three of these stories miss the mark. Two of the three stories put the spotlight on Kitty Pryde, while the middle story puts an emphasis on Colossus. All three stories have largely mediocre writing, but the most noteworthy one is the first one, written by Chris Claremont. Claremont clearly has a good grasp on these characters even today. He characterizes Kitty well in an enjoyable story. Unfortunately, the issue doesn’t feel necessary. It does flesh out the relationship and feels like a waste. The second and third stories are mostly generic bachelor party stories that are easily forgettable.
Unfortunately, the art does not shine either. Todd Nauck’s art in the first story stands out with appealing spreads. Classic X-Men moments maintain their retro feel, but it always feels odd seeing panels like these in the modern era. Greg Land takes over the art in the second story, which is easily the ugliest. Land’s characters appear stiff and they all share the same expressions. This is especially noticeable with Nightcrawler, who simply looks bizarre. The final story’s art by Marika Cresta is serviceable.
X-Men: The Wedding Special #1 is disappointing. This was a great opportunity for Marvel to drum up genuine excitement for what should be a wonderful event. Instead, this special only highlights what is already wrong with the relationship. The only people that are likely excited to see this happen are longterm fans.
X-Men: The Wedding Special
A disappointing special that fails to make the upcoming wedding feel special.
