Wonder Woman #760
DC Comics
Writer: Mariko Tamaki
Artist: Mikel Janin & Jordie Belaire
The first issue of Mariko Tamaki’s Wonder Woman run set the stage for a familiar yet invigorating storyline. It was accessible to new readers while also giving longtime fans something to enjoy. Wonder Woman #760 is full of exposition as Tamaki and the rest of the creative team start putting the major pieces into place.
After an encounter with Max Lord, Diana is stuck in a mystery involving the mind control of random people in the city. The only problem is that Max is in prison and doesn’t appear to be actively using his abilities. It’s a somewhat recognizable storyline but it doesn’t seem to fall into most of the tropes that similar stories run into. Tamaki’s script is solid, delivering strong dialogue and a few harrowing moments that keep the story interesting. It’s an enjoyable read that embraces most of the elements that make Wonder Woman such a great character.
The only complaint I have with this issue is its pacing. I mentioned how familiar this story feels familiar, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Unfortunately, a lot of this issue’s familiarity is due to a bit of repetition. A few of this issue’s pages are dedicated to another mind control scene, which just feels a lot like what was seen in the previous issue. I understand that readers need to see how many people are being affected by the villain, but too many pages are used for this particular scene. Still, the fun, if not predictable twist ending seems to imply that the story will move forward from here.
Mikel Janin and Jordie Bellaire deliver another great looking issue. Unsurprisingly, the action looks stellar throughout the issue. Everything flows extraordinarily well, allowing readers to take in the issue at the intended pace. The action spreads are full of beauty and excitement too, making the issue thrilling to look at.
Some of the quiet scenes don’t look quite as great as the rest of the issue. Some character expressions just look a little off-putting, but this doesn’t ruin the experience. Bellaire’s colors are fantastic, flawlessly changing between palettes to deliver the emotion and tone needed for each scene. Overall Wonder Woman and the rest of the cast look great here.
Wonder Woman #760 might not have the best pacing, but everything else in the issue works exceptionally well. Tamaki, Janin, and Bellaire have fantastic chemistry, and anyone with an interest in Wonder Woman should be checking out this run.
