Wicked Things #1
BOOM! Studios
Writer: John Allison
Artists: Max Sarin & Whitney Cogar
Giant Days is possibly the best slice of life Western comic book series. The college students are so full of charm that it is impossible not to fall in love with the series. Now that the series has concluded, its time to look forward to new projects by John Allison, Max Sarin, and Whitney Cogar. Wicked Things is the latest series by the team, and while it has the same charm as Giant Days, readers should expect a new type of story.
Charlotte Grote is a prodigy detective. The young detective is being nominated for the best teen detective in the world. As she goes to the award ceremony and meets the best of her peers, she realizes that the idols who surround her aren’t who she thinks she is.
John Allison instantly makes Charlotte easy to connect to by giving the young character a fun personality and relatable emotions. Fans of Giant Days will instantly feel at home while reading this issue. It establishes itself early as a cute series that gives off tons of the same vibes that the creative team’s previous serious has.
I didn’t read the synopsis of this series knowing that no matter what it is about, I wanted to read it. I’d recommend readers doing the same if possible. Not knowing what the series is about will make the twist at the end of the issue have tons of impact. I didn’t see it coming, and it turns everything on its head. The rest of the series will likely be a massive departure from what we are used to, and readers should be looking forward to the future.
While I did enjoy this issue quite a bit, the story does feel familiar. The twist is surprising, but it doesn’t feel entirely original either. Still, this doesn’t prevent Wicked Things #1 from being an impressive debut.
Max Sarin and Whitney Cogar come together to complete the package. The art undeniably full of charm, with wildly expressive faces and beautiful colors. The characters’ eyes alone can tell the story of how they feel. The characters’ actions and movements are often larger than life, making the mundane feel impactful to the reader. The story flows from panel to panel, allowing the reader to simply enjoy the story without a hitch.
Wicked Things #1 is everything you could possibly want in a debut. A wonderful protagonist, a fun script, and some of the best art in the medium all make this an excellent read.
