West Coast Avengers #10
Marvel Comics
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Moy R.
Another week, another of my favorite series ending. That’s right, this issue of West Coast Avengers is the final issue for this team. Am I bummed about it? Yeah, but it’s been a fun series to read. In West Coast Avengers #10 the team fights for their lives against a cult of vampires. They have America Chavez as a hostage, believing her to be part of their prophecy. Among the vampire cult is also Kate Bishop’s mom, who she thought dead. In this final issue, the team has to save America, or the vampires will use her to conquer the world.
This issue feels like there’s a bit too much story stuffed in, and at the same time like not much really happens. Of course, being the final issue, I understand that they’re trying to wrap up the story as best they can in twenty pages. It’s… fine. The first half wraps up the whole vampire cult and the story with Kate’s mom. The second half focuses on the team more. I like the characters, so I’m glad that they all got a moment in front of the camera, literally, to end it. It puts a nice bow on everything. I don’t really like that Ramone, who got powers in the last issue, just ends the whole fight with vampires in a second. As far as the story goes, she’s had her powers for less than a day, it just feels a little too deus ex machina for me.
For the most part, I like the art in this issue. The action is really good and dynamic. There have been a few artists on this series, and each style is different, but they’ve all had a similar look. It’s helped the book keep its tone, and there’s no super dramatic shift between each artist. I like the coloring by Triona Farrell. The fight against the vampires is in a basement, but there are still some good looking, vibrant colors, though a bit muted. It’s not a complaint, but just something I couldn’t help but notice is that the characters are all a bit muscley. They’re all superheroes, I get it, it would be weird if they weren’t. It’s maybe just this artists style, but it’s just super noticeable to me in this issue.
I still really enjoy this series, and I can already tell I’ll re-read it fully in the near future. I think this story could have benefited from another issue or two, just to fully flesh it out. There are a few story points that wrap up, and it feels a bit rushed. But as it is, it’s an okay ending. It’s better than a cliffhanger or teases for anything that we know wouldn’t get seen again. If you’ve been enjoying this series, there’s no reason to skip this issue. It’d be weird to get to #9 and then not read this one.
West Coast Avengers (2018-) #10
Being the final issue in the series, West Coast Avengers #10 ties up the running plot, but feels rushed in doing so.
