Unnatural #8
Image Comics
Writer & Artist: Mirka Andolfo
Spoiler Warning
An escape, a death, and an attempted suicide. Like much of this series, this issue is not short on action.
Determine to take ownership of her life, Leslie makes a splash on the first page of this installment as she attempts to save her friends from herself. With the albino threatening to take over her completely, she continues to resist. How many friends must she lose before she figures out how to rid herself of her demon? The story can’t go on like this forever, but where all this action is driving to, I have no clue. I’m short on predictions for Leslie’s future. I’ve admired her fight thus far, and based on her ferocity on the cover of this issue, I don’t see her backing down.
With the Glance now unmasked, we’re finally getting all that backstory we’d been begging for. Leslie’s mom’s degenerate romance with her lion lover is depicted sweetly by Andolfo with the flashbacks told in varying tones of gray. Andolfo is extremely selective about the few colors she includes in these panels, and the end result is quite satisfying.
Despite loving some pages, the art in this issue wasn’t my favorite. I thought a couple of the characters had overactive tear ducts, which took away from the actual emotion being portrayed. If it was a little more subtle, it might be more believable. As it is now, it removes me from the drama. Other than that, the art was stellar. I especially loved how Andolfo depicted internal chaos with Khal and Saya by using the blur to emphasize that chaos as the albino attempted to prove his power to them.
Since there are so few characters remaining, I’d like to see more character development for Khal and Saya as well as more backstory for the Glance. Knowing Andolfo, it will come to us all in good time. She’s done a good job of covering her bases so far, so I trust she’ll follow through.
