Uncanny X-Men #2
Marvel Comics
Writer: Ed Brisson, Matthew Rosenberg, Kelly Thompson
Artist: R.B. Silva
The debut for Uncanny X-Men was one of my favorite X-Men issues of the year. In the oversized issue, the creative team managed to bring back the character banter and fun that makes the X-Men great. With Uncanny X-Men #2, the series’ writers are able to capitalize on the previous issue’s momentum thanks to the weekly comic format, even if it comes with a few hiccups.
The trio of writers’ most noteworthy strength is their ability to write the characters well. X-Men is fun again, with witty banter and easy characters to connect to. Despite the incredibly large cast in this book, the writers manage to give all of the characters just enough attention. The dynamics between the characters is as fine as ever, with some genuinely funny dialogue.
While most of the enjoyable aspects of the previous issue remain here, this issue does suffer from a little too much of Multiple Man. So far, he isn’t a compelling force in this series, and the pacing and enjoyability of the series are certainly suffering as a result. Most of the issue’s action revolves around Multiple Man, but there are some fun moments between Laura and a few dinosaurs. Ridiculous moments like these are where the story shines, and I hope that the series continues to not take itself too seriously.
Artist R.B Silva takes the artistic reigns from Mahmud Asrar, which leads to a different feel. The actual tone of the series doesn’t change much in this issue, but the different strengths of the artists are clear. Silva’s art is clean and leads to some wonderful visuals throughout action scenes. The characters do appear a bit stiffer than they did the last issue. A few facial expressions look really off and just don’t fit in with the rest of the book.
Uncanny X-Men #2 picks up from the previous issue well. It carries over all of the enjoyable aspects but brings a few new problems with it as well. Fortunately, it succeeds in presenting an entertaining and diverse ensemble cast, with some fun moments sprinkled in.
