    Comic Review: Uncanny X-Men (2018-) #1

    Uncanny X-Men #1

    Marvel Comics

Writers: Ed Brisson, Kelly Thompson, Matthew Rosenberg

Artists: Mahmud A. Asrar, Mark Bagley, Mirko Colak

The X-Men have been fine recently. By “Fine,” I mean that over the last few years, the X-Men stories have been flirting with mediocrity more or less. This is coming from a huge X-Men that wants to see nothing more than my favorite mutants get the love that they deserve. With the exception of a few titles, most of the X-Men books have been difficult to recommend to new fans simply because they just aren’t great. Uncanny X-Men just might be the remedy for the Children of the Atom.

Uncanny X-Men #1 is a lot of comic book. It features a talented list of creators, including Ed Brisson, Matthew Rosenberg, Kelly Thompson, Mahmud Asrar Ibraim Roberson, and Mark Bagley. Over twenty X-Men are featured as members of the Uncanny X-Men. It feels like a classic X-Men story but written for the modern audience. It’s incredibly familiar, and longterm fans will find a lot of history scattered throughout the issue.

    Uncanny X-Men (2018-) #1: Director's Edition

What’s most important about this debut issue is just how fun it is. Aside from Mr. And Mrs. X, I haven’t had a lot of fun reading X-Men titles recently. Despite the size of the issue, it reads fast. It often sacrifices substance for style, but this is easy to forgive thanks to how much the creative team brings to the table.

    Uncanny X-Men (2018-) #1: Director's Edition

Every artist in this first issue succeeds in bringing a great looking team. Each style is mostly different, but none of the artists stands out from the other in a way that detracts from the experience. Asrar’s part of the story looks especially great. In every story, the coloring is spectacular, allowing for the characters and their abilities to shine in the panels.

I don’t know if Uncanny X-Men is going to save the series, but it feels special. It’s been a while since I’ve had this much fun reading a mainline X-Men book. The massive creative team allows for all the right characters to shine, and this is an excellent jumping on point for all readers, new and old.

Marcus isn't good at a lot, but he is an expert at replaying Final Fantasy games despite there being a lot of good stuff out there. He also loves comics, board games, and anime. He thinks Chip Zdarsky is a treasure.
