The Terrifics #10
DC Comics
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Viktor Bogdanovic
BETRAYALS! SUSPENSE! ACTION! TEAMWORK! LOSS! GIANT ZOMBIE ALIEN FROM THE DARK MULTIVERSE WRECKING HAVOC! It’s all here in the latest issue of: THE TERRIFICS!
The tremendously thrilling Terrifics and the superbly spectacular Strong family come face to face with the dastardly Doctor Dread, who we discovered in the previous issues was behind all the wrongdoings and hijinks so far but was also none other than Simon Stagg’s caveman bodyguard Java! DUN DUN DUUUUN!
But just before the two teams snatch the evil ape-man, they have one huge problem to deal with: The (ahem not-Galactus) Dark Elder, a giant celestial being that the Terrifics and Tom Strong encountered earlier in the series, completely zombified and hungry! But it is this issue where the two teams stand out so much, working a team dynamic that is so fun to see as they take down this monster while also trying to stop the villain. Each character’s unique personality bounces off of each other so well, something that’s been the best thing of the series so far.
Lemire’s done a great job with this team and it’s one of the best DC books to read at the moment, definitely the biggest highlight of the New Age of Heroes. The overall story has moved and evolved nicely, tying earlier plot points and arcs altogether while making it not cluttered or messy. It really does feel like an early 70’s adventure team book which I’m glad to read as it’s such a breath of fresh air. With the announcement that this is the only book that seems to be surviving out of the rest of the New Age of Heroes is sad, it is also satisfying to hear. The Terrifics is a team book that has loads of untapped potential for future stories, but with the way this issue ended is this the route that Lemire plans on taking???
Art is by Viktor Bogdanovic or as I like to call diet Greg Capullo. Those of you are unsure of his work, he was drawing Silencer and it’s really nice to look at. The pencil-sketchy look on each of the characters is something I’m a sucker for. The design of the Dark Elder is so grand scale and Bogdanovic captures the weight and sheer enormity of him.
Overall, Terrifics continues to be TERRIFIC! Lemire’s not-Fantastic Four have really been an enjoyable series, a fan favorite of mine from 2018. I can’t wait to see the direction the story is going to take for the new year, especially that huge teaser of a last page!
