The Plot #2
Vault Comics
Writers: Tim Daniel & Michael Moreci
Artists: Joshua Hixson & Jordan Boyd
The Plot #1 caught me off guard with its dark and twisted debut. The ominous story, moody penciling, and dark colors all did a fantastic job of setting up the horror series. With issue #2 hitting the stands, it’s time for Tim Daniel and company to get the attention that they deserve.
Writers Tim Daniel and Michael Moreci continue to establish the eerie world of The Plot in issue #2. Chase and Mackenzie are starting to unravel what is going on with their family. Daniel and Moreci are doing a stellar job at giving this story the suspense it needs to succeed. The Plot is moving at just the right pace, guiding readers through the journey into madness. No major revelations are thrown at the reader, and nothing truly makes sense yet. Still, the characters and expert storytelling makes the reader compelled to continue the story.
The characters in The Plot are all dynamic and interesting. They drive the events of the story forward naturally and all succeed at feeling real. None of the dialogue is overly cheesy and the typical tropes in horror are mostly avoided. The writers can’t receive enough praise for their handling of the characters and suspense. Some will be turned away by how slow and seemingly methodical everything is, but the average reader will find plenty to love.
The Plot‘s suspense succeeds with the fantastic art setting the tone. Every suspenseful beat is fully realized in the panels by Joshua Hixson. Hixson caught my eye in Shanghai Red with his gritty style that successfully carries dark stories. That style is perfect for this book, which is full of moody backgrounds and serious subject matter. The colors by Jordan Boyd are moody, full of murky greens and yellows. Everything feels gross throughout the issue, especially when the monsters appear. Boyd allows for Hixson’s style to be fully realized in this book, making the art feel almost completely different from Shanghai Red.
Horror enthusiasts should absolutely be reading The Plot. It’s one of the pleasant surprises of the year, with strong tension and creepy designs. For those who think this book is just a bit too slow, things are looking to ramp up in issue #3. Don’t miss this one.
